    Question AE86 Stub Axle

I am just wondering what the likelihood of an AE86 stub axle bending with 16" rims and fast street driving, no competition?

I am in the process of a brake upgrade on my TA22 celica and the options are to get AE86 coilovers from T3 or make up some coilovers using the corona strut, which inturn has a larger stub axle.

Do I need to worry about the stub axle bending if I am not intending to use the car on a circuit?

    Thanks,

    Nick.

The stub axle wont bend either way IMHO. Plenty of people have used these struts (and the same sized TA22 struts) in rally over the years and its not the stubaxle that bends. The main advantage, axle wise, to the corona upgrade is the fact that the bearing is bigger and therefore will take that bit more abuse before dying.

On the street you wont have that issue, well not in the same quantities as on the track. Because lets face it, where on the street are you going to be generating the same heat as repeated 200->60 in 100m braking patterns*, maybe 10-20 times in a short 20min session.

    *ok, maybe exaggerated slightly

The size of the wheel has nothing to do with that, it's the diameter of the tyre.

The wheels are without tyres at the moment, prob a low profile wide belt tyre will be fitted...

I am not sure what the specs are yet on the tyre I am looking at getting.

the group A spoontahs had a sleeve put over the axle and in later years changed to ra40 struts much stronger all round
and takai they do flex as in the std stub axle

in the previous Race magazine, the story about the IPRA BDA-powered escort talks about a spacer/sleeve between the inner/outer bearing races thus strengthening the hub/bearing unit - but that's for a serious race workhorse, not a street car

Sure, they flex. But i would be hard pressed finding any place in this country that they would flex on the street.

True, within legal speeds. But the guy is asking about the street isnt he.

If he was asking about the track i would say instantly upgrade to the bigger stub axles.

Thanks for the feedback fellas, the car is going to be driven on the street and thats about it...

Its not a daily driver, its a weekend cruiser, so I usually cain it when I have the chance, but I doubt that its going to encounter any continuous stress like a track car would...

My mechanic just warned me about the size of the stub axles when putting stiffer suspension and larger wheels on them etc...

I think they're just trying to warn you that 100,000 mile/kilometer bearing life might not be possible with different offsets and/or higher loads. The failures are more likely due to age, contamination, poor install and/or lubrication then excess load IMO.
