it's the one closest to the timing belt.
Could someone please tell me which is the number one cylinder on the 5S-FE engine on my ST204.
As you face the motor in the car do you count from the left or the right ?

it's the one closest to the timing belt.
Which on a FWD Toyota is from left to right when standing at the front of the car looking at the engine.
The "back" of the engine is the gear box end,
The front of the engine is the end that usually has the fan belt, harmonic balencer and belt driven devices such as the alternator and p's and A/c pumps..
hope that helps![]()

thats the firing order.. pulley doesnt not match the firing order..
Thanks everyone .
I got confused with this as the pos Chilterns manual has the cylinders numbered from left to right facing the engine with the dizzy on the right as - 4-3-2-1- for the 5S-FE engine and the plug wiring nothing like what is actualy in there -- and working fine thank you very much .
The plug leads also have the numbers on them , I picked up on that by accident when I cleaned them last night , very faint writing , which is why I missed it in the first place.
Now-ah hem , I have to have the No one piston at TDC on the firing stroke .
How do I tell ? as this does not neccessarily correspond by aligning the timing mark on the crank pulley and the 0 on the timing belt cover.
I'm thinking my long magnet on a wire thingo for retrieving dropped nuts and stuff from awkward places down the plug hole turn over the crank , up comes the thingo , I line up the pulley and timing belt marks to 0 and Bobs your uncle firing stroke TDC .??
Now how wrong am I ?
What are you doing mate, just changing plugs and leads or replacing a timing belt?
I've just had the timing belt ,water pump and all the pulleys replaced by a supposedly reputable workshop , now when the engine gets to normal opperating temperature I'm getting a gruub--gruub-- gruub noise from the timing belt end of the engine .
I've taken it back to them and got the old "wait till it settles in" routine from them by which time if the belt is malfunctioning who knows what it will have fraked up.
I've done a post regarding this on here---
http://www.toymods.org.au/forums/sho...php?t=62959---
---and RT104GT was kind enough to post a fix for it .
I've done this and achieved about a 70% + noise reduction but I now realise I may not have had the number one piston at TDC on it's firing stroke.so I'm going to do it again and make sure I get it right.
The only way I can think of (seriously) to identify the No 1 piston firing stroke is to take of the distributor cap and turn the engine until the distributor rotor is at No 1 lead firing position and coincides with the crank pulley mark and the timing belt cover mark 0 alignment.
And I realy didn't want to make this frakin job more agravational than it allready is.![]()
No probs I was just asking as I wasn't aware of your previous thread outlining your frustrations .
Sounds like your on your way mate, all the best hope you get some joy![]()
