The oil is not quite as dirty as it looks in the photo but there certainly is a lot of particles.
The large piece was a bit disconcerting to find but the engine still runs very well so there doesn't seem to be any problems so far. Also it is quite possible the piece didn't come from the engine as the drip pan still had some junk in it before I dropped the oil. (there were even some leaves floating around lol)

On the couple of engines I have rebuilt I have never driven them at all on the initial sump full of oil. I do the initial startup then get the engine up to temperature by running it at 2-3000rpm. Then drop the oil and filter and put in new oil and filter.

There is alway a hell of a lot of rubbish left in the block after reconditioning that you don't want floating around in the engine.

Not if its been cleaned properly after reconditioning.

At work, 3000psi of hot steamy water tends to clear it out. Probably the cleanest its ever been.

In my experience it doesn't matter how much the machine shop cleaned it out there will still be rubbish in there.

The initial start-up wear is also a big contributor to the crud in the oil after the first running of the engine.

hmm, well i can understand where you are coming from.

But after we have finished with the blocks etc at work and have them on the dyno for run in. They show no signs of machining swarf or the likes watsoever.
