While at Dubbo for the Nats, on Saturday arvo I thought it would be a good idea to pull apart the front of my engine and check out the timing marks of the cam gears and crank. At first I thought I may have been a tooth out so I re timed the engine and put everything back together. After all the mucking around, it was still pinging. However im getting a fault code 14 - ignition system. Im going to replace the coil/igniter assembly and the dizzy. See what happends next.

    HEY YES...

I had this happen to me.

I took the crank pulley from one motor and put it on a different motor (cos the original crank pulley shat itself) and it turned out that the timing was WAY out because the timing marks on #2 crank pulley were different from #1..

Worth thinking about well and truely.

My engine is still pinging after some adjustments. So far I have:

    1. Checked the timing belt = GOOD
    2. Checked the timing = GOOD
    3. Swapped distributors = STILL PINGING (yet to check if still showing fault code 14)
    4. Swapped coil/ignitor = STILL PINGING
    5. Replaced Fuel filter = STILL PINGING

next step is to replace fuel pump which is under investigation

Me wonders if its actually pinging and not some other noise the engine is making!? vibration/rattle?

Correct me if I am wrong, but you have said that you had the head resurfaced (twice?).

It seems to me then that that would be the cause. Next step would be a stock head, or a thicker headgasket.

    Pube,

Have you actually checked your fuel pressure and flow ? Pinging can be caused by many things but running lean is one of them.

If you retard the base timing does the pinging stop ?

Do any of your spark plugs show signs of detonation ?

its difficult to check the fuel pressure under boost as the gauge is attached to the regulator which is on the engine. One thing I havent done is remove the spark plugs which im trying to avoid due to the mission of removing the water to air intercooler and everything to go with it. I have retarded the timing back to around 7 deg but still pings.

Could it be too higher a compression?

I'd be doing the bastard job and checking your spark plugs - they never lie about what's actually happening inside the combustion chamber.

It may well be that the engine is running a little lean, or just not at optimum AFRs, due to the raising of compression from shaving the head so much more than normal.

Might be worth getting it onto a dyno, or borrowing a wideband Oxy sensor and gauge from someone - then you can see what the AFRs are like.

Like Rod, im thinking you are leaning out on your AFRs... could be fuel system, or could be incorrect fuel mix due to changes in compression.

Thats my thoughts for the day
