    Spanner-in-the-works time.
I reckon for a light little car a 2NZFE would be great. They weigh very little, make reasonable power, and are very economonical.

rotora is a no go espically in a VW! (well for me anyway)

i dont think ive ever seen a 1000 mazda ute, ive seen a few 1300's around before and contenplated getting one a while back (very cheep and good price for the condition it was in) but would rather keep it toyota (or datsun as the 2nd option)

ive been thinking 1nzfe/2nzfe would be good weight wise but producing a RWD bellhousing and rewelding the plastic intake would be whorth more than the whole project combined...

have you had a looking into RWD config for them yet billzilla?

Yes, but only in my racing car and that's very different to a road car.
(And with a short-stroke crank to make it 940cc and a turbo hanging off the side)

Datsun 1000 Wagon - weird, rare, 2 door and light (650kg) pick your engine and away.
I had one many moons ago and from memory the suspension was
transverse leaf and A arms front
    live axle and leaves rear

Not keen on a clubman or out of the price range?

At least you will have a decent suspension design and can just go for a mild 20V to get your 100rwkW although i dont know what the fuel consumption would be like but definitely better than the guys with them in Corollas due to the sheer weight difference.

    Go the clubbie ......

Most are under 600kgs - but they have the aerodynamics of a brick. Most fun you can have sitting down though!!

its more not keen + i dont think a clubman would satisfy my orginal concept.

ill add these in as well

    Datsun 1200 wagon
    Datsun 1200 Ute - 710kg ~730kg
    Datsun 1200 2dr sedan
    Toyota KE70 - 850kg ~ 900kg

mounting a suzuki hayabusa engine might be fun, but im sure they would chew the fuel

theres also a layland/couper mini with on it it RWD converted as well

i think you need to sit down and re-evaluate your goals...
it seems like you want something small, impractical and noisy, but no tusing much fuel..
so a clubman with a ZZ or NZ engine or even a stock 20V will fit the needs.

hayabusa engine in a KE70? oh dear....

just pick a small car you like, then fit a stock engine to it, and don7t fark around with the motor.. and it will give good fuel economy

oh, and then completely change the suspension, brakes and the rest of the driveline to cope

It won't fit the needs to take bikes in the back (or BMX or whatever it was)

And you don't wanna add any extra weight, so you leave the brakes and drivetrain as light as possible and drive it softly - it's a daily after all

Something like that, its hard to explain but i guess i want to build a late 60's eary 70's jap touring car inspired daily (R100, early GTResk) that i can have a blast in from time to time shipping me too and from work & uni (and most of the time it will just be me in the car) and figuring that less weight = less power needed and less fuel used to get around.
its just figuring out which motor is going to suit the project the best. weather its cracking open a 5k and adding gas & turbo to the mix or using a newer motor for the conversion... a BT 20v sounds good having the most power out of the range and being the newest, would like to try 1nzfe or 1zzfe motors but the work & cost involved to engineer these into a RWD congiuration for a private tunner would be to large.

ive narrowed it down to KP30 (if i can find one) or KE20/KE25 (more attainable i guess),

if any of thoese cars ive listed cant fit a bmx in the back ill be worried!!! Me and my mates used to get 3 blokes and 3 bikes into both a RC colt and N12 pulsar so im sure it will fit with enough space. just needs about 30" from window to window for it to fit (front wheel off that is)
