    Default 13bt in a lux

    hey all

    thinking of a way to try and make my lux unique in sum ways and came apon the idea of putting a 13b-turbo rotary in it...

    these things go friggen insane in heavier cars and with the small amount of weight in the back of my ute i reckon a rotar would fry sum tyres as well as be a wicked car to drive

    wot u all think??

    13B=no

    20B=now were talking

    in all honesty i think i would still rather a TT 1UZ as it will make the same power and be more reliable (not to mention cheaper.

    cheers

    being different just for the sake of being different is rice.

    ignore what other people are doing and make your decision based on sensible facts; cost, reliability, power etc. if it turns out that it has done before then its a case of great minds thinking alike; there is nothing wrong with that, you still have plenty of room to be different; making it a better quality and factory looking conversion for starters.

    what about a 1mz and TT that? should have all the power and economy you need aswell as being different.

    i dont believe that you would be happy with the result a 13b would give at the end of the day, nor the fuel comsumption.

    i understand you want to be different but at the end of the day being different will end up costing you alot more $$$ than going with something proven.

    1MZ = Camry/Avalon 3.0L V6.

    I agree with the above, "different" is highly overrated. Besides it's not like there are 1UZ Hilux's everywhere you go, it's still pretty unique in the overall scheme of things.

    1uz or 1mz with 2 turbos will mak you very different to the norm and also be reliable whilst making some decent power (not yet sure on the 1MZtt but ill let you know in 6months)

    i know of 5 luxes around here with 1uz's and they are good things, if you add tt to the equation you will be extremely different to the norm as there are alot of ppl talking about it but not too many that actually do it.

    how much on average would a 1uz conversion cost?? or does is depend on turbos, making up manifolds, fuels pump choices etc?

    A 13BT would certainly be unique. I've never heard of one in a Hilux before, but as a purist I wouldn't consider it. As the people before me have said,
    make your decision based on sensible facts; cost, reliability, power etc.
    In the end it's your decision though and you should do what you want to do.
    As far as the cost of a 1UZ TT conversion goes it'll be mostly based on how much you do yourself and if you use new or second hand parts.

    Work out what you really want from the car, but if you want people to agree that putting a rotary into it is a good idea, don't ask on a Toyota forum. Perhaps visit www.ausrotary.com as they're a bunch of rotor-heads

    The 13B would be a cracker of an engine, assuming you're talking about a 2WD one that's fairly light. Don't listen to anyone who says you need a 20B, they're just running off buzz words... currently the record holder in the most popular class is actually a ***12A*** so a 13B will be more than enough... fairly easy to make enough power to get into the 9 second zone from an essentially standard motor with some bolt-ons.

    Some people will turn their nose up at this conversion, just because it's different... some people don't like 'crossing streams' as it were and like to see an engine from the same manufacturer.

    Engines like the 3SGTE, 1JZ and 1UZ are all great ideas but bang-for-buck a 13BT is a great choice too and will be very easy to fit... and very light!! That said, budget on a rebuild - they're not as unreliable as people say but they do tend to have had hard lives so budget on a freshen-up at some point. They are also going to be heavier on fuel, certainly a valid consideration with world oil prices having hit a record high overnight.

    I have whacked a 13B in a previous car I owned and whilst it went very well, it was a thirsty mutha, so please take that into consideration.

    Also heat was unbelieveable, so for example on longer highway cruise (ie > 1 hr @ 100/110kmh) the cabin used to warm up because of the heat soak from the motor itself and the unreal heat radiating from the exhaust. Heaps of heat shields required!!

    I am not trying to disuade you, I liked the power etc but if I had my time over again, I would'nt do it - particularly with the price of fuel these days. Your idea is very cool, ....Just an fyi so you know the realities with living with rotaries...

    I agree with shifty. I am all for using toyota engines but I can't see how TTing a 1mz is going to be easier than slappy a 13bt in a hilux. Sort out the engine and gearbox mounts and auxilliaries. Get a microtech and wire that in to original hilux loom. Slap a decent sized turbo on it and off you go Will make some pretty serious power

    na 1uz hilux are slow as IMO. Mid 15 second cars after doing a conversion seems absolutely pointless to me? TT then they are quick no doubt but I would think that engine bay space is going to be difficult with this in comparison to a small 13bt with one decent sized turbo on it.

    yes, budget a rebuild into the cost of the conversion for a 13bt. You could do the same for a piston engine as well but most people don't bother. Depends on how serious you want to be and how fast you want to spend.
