holy crap you were on the lathe and not wearing glasses... you goose.

the best habit is just ALWAYS wear glasses. you put them on as you walk into the shed dont take them off until you leave. if you only put them on when you're grinding or lathing etc then you still get caught out by the unforseen.

hahah good thing chicks dig scars mate. my arm is cominmg up to be a prety wild scar

see you came off ok. glasses wouldnt and prevented the bruise but you could have lost your sight which the glasses would have helped prevent.

First time I had to take an oil filter off, it had been tightened to buggery by the Toyota dude who had put it on in the first place. Filter removal tools wouldn't work, rubber gloves wouldn't work, couldn't even punch a hole with a long screwdriver. So I got out the drill, and put a neat 10mm hole all the way through the filter. Got the tyre-iron (longer and thicker), jammed that through the hole, and off she came

Personally I would neve resort to punching a screwdriver through...I have seen the entire casing rip with barely any effort leaving behind a metal ring and the thread with nowt to grip on to turn it....in fact I am pretty sure there was a HELP thread on here a while back that had the exact same issue!!

A rubber glove is normally the best...

If that doesnt work get some really corse sand paper to hold with the rubber glove...

If that does not work I have discovered that one of the old steering rack bushes from the AW11 makes a perfect gripping tool to do it You need the round one (one has a flat side).

I have always felt weird just doing the filter up to finger tight but I have never had one fall of yet!!!

whatever you do, don't remove exhaust manifold heat shield...

hate the aircon line that's in the way as well.. have to clean it everytime i do a service as i get oil all over it..

i use an oil filter tool, round grip type, with a povo-spec (KFC or Mackers) paper towel wrapped around the oil filter.. usually gets it off... with the no room, i usually make room from that little gap beside the heat-shield... enough to get leverage

Just another suggestion, try using your belt. Make sure its a leather belt, and then the tighter you pull it, the tighter it clamps the filter.

Just make sure the buckle is in good shape first as that will be the week point. Yes, you will end up with a dirty belt but thats easy to clean.

This has always been my last resort, as I haven't had to go to a screwdriver before, but in the few times I've need it, belt=2 filter=0.

Good luck, and make sure you slap the person who did it up that tight.

yeah, I'm slapping myself right now... no not in that way you sick people...

    but screwdriver FTW!!!

it finally came off, TooF was right I just needed to HTFU.

Filter is changed, oil back in and ready to roll.

Now to get on with all the other things I was hoping to do today... Oh well, look like the suspension has a few more days grace left... but I'll bleed the brakes while the car is up.

Rep spread to those I could.

    Guaranteed 100% to work.

Get a screwdriver and use it like a cold chisel on the outer ring of the oil filter and tap it with the hammer. It will slowly but surely more the oil filter little by little until it is loose enough to get with your hand.

This is what i usually resort to.

Only problem is this will more than likely not work with the standard headers as iirc you cant get a screwdriver though the top and onto the oil filter.

I'd avoid putting a screwdriver through the side. A mate did this once and snapped off the threaded bit off the filter locator

Has anyone heard of welding a nut to the top of the filter? Apparently some filters are available like this so it might be handy.

Just not sure if you would have the room to move the tool in the adub - i know there is plenty in my car.

The fact that you've got it off now makes this a moot point, but there has been no filter that I've seen that hasn't been able to remove with a screwdriver. If you tap it enough, the shock is usually enough to break the seal. Pretty f'ing messy and definetly a last resort though.

the K&N filters have the nut on the top, you would be able to get a socket or spanner onto them no worries. there is actually more room in there then there is in a 4age ae82/ae92 corolla.

that said if you dont over tighten them it isnt really an issue
