    1 - gen 3 280rwkw 24psi broke no.6 piston
2 - gen 1 235rwkw 20psi just wore out and died, bugger all compression even when it was put it the car, even less when it came out, this was my rally motor when i used to go into the state forest and climb some hills
3 - gen 3 240rwkw 21psi big end bearing from an over rev i think, happend in the rain one day, limiter was set abit to high i think
4 - gen 2 rebuilt 240rwkw @ 6000rpm and climbing haha 22psi... this motor later all of one day was the biggest arse around ever, blew the thermo fan fuse on a hot day stuck in traffic and cooked the motor, head gasket and head rooted
5 - gen 3 no power run yet, will find out at dyno day as its been going for 2 days now with no drama!

I feel like a whinging old bastard, but I'm hoping this could stay on topic. Its an awesome idea!

There is a also a 1G tech thread here for questions like that

I'm looking here because my 1G has been sitting for a while. Sounds like a full gasket kit, rings, bearings and timing belts will be a good idea before I fit it.

The tips on the front pulley and oil pickups will help too! Thanks guys!

    Timbo,

I just purchased a full rebuild gasket kit for mine and I opted for the genuine Toyota Gasket Kit from Castle Hill Toyota. Ask for James. It was $450 in round figures. Fitting the new rubbers for the cam covers and retaining bolts (which I upgraded to S/S button head cap screws) was so good.

1st one - gen 2 running standard boost. Turbos were a litle smokey and had horrid electrical dramas due to a very shoddy wiring loom conversion. Am I allowed to point fingers at quickF##K....... No probably not........

2nd engine - Gen3 15psi and 149rwkw. Gave it a hiding at wakefield and paid the price. Must have had oil surge problems due to a very small and very crude sump. Was a mid sump with most of the back of it cut out to clear the cross-member. Spun a couple of big ends and rattled all the way home. It also killed the coil lead that day but I don't consider that an engine failure, more just the higher combustion pressures putting more strain on the ignition system.

3rd engine was actually the 1st long engine (gen2) with all the gen 3 ancillaries. Was running strong until Dave got it......... Speaking of which Dave has quite an appetite for 1G's where is he?????

Haha... You make the look bad there Josh.

    Mine was a Late 1GGZE, essentially a Gen 3 I guess
Lasted best part of 2 years over 210rwkw, some of that around 250rwkw all at 21 psi all with a manual.
Spun a bearing nearing the end of a dyno session (no.6 I think) was making 240rwkw at 18psi with the new auto.
Upon stripping the engine, centre main bearing and thrust were buggered, big end buggered, crank cracked (where the centre main bearing is only). Balancer had welded itself to the nose of the crank.

    Gidday Rod

My first 1ggte was a gen 2 and blew a head gasket 'cos I got the thermo fan setting too high - 95c. Pretty sure corrosion was not a problem as it came out of a front cut and had coolant in it until immediately prior to fitting.

My second 1ggte was a gen 3 and just stopped working. Did not worry me too much as I was just about to embark on a major upgrade. 'Spose I must pull it apart and find out why?

My third 1ggte is a gen 3. I have not broken it yet but plan to wind up the boost soon and see what we can get out of a standard engine. I will be back from PNG playing with the car towards the end of February. At last count it had around 220rwkw at just on 12psi.

My 4th 1ggte is waiting for the stroker kit from Kyle and will be fitted with a HKS head. Its NOT going to break. Well not for a while anyway.

    Cheers Craig

    Craig,

I am pretty sure its when the coolant is left in that the gaskets "rot" as it gradually soaks into the composite. Personally I always store my engines Dry and prefer a liberal does of a good assembly lube so I can wind them over by hand periodically.

220rwkw at 12psi is Awesome and about what I hope to end up with eventually. Looking forward to catching up when you get back.

I'm almost keen to strap the XX onto a dyno again, after I sorted out the triggering issue, it's a whole different car to drive.

this thread is expanding at an alarming rate and i just finished putting a 1g in my 23

i havent ran it since i bought it from cvap more than 6 months ago now, bu there is oil inside the intake, someone once said the rear turbo's are notorious for blowing. dunno if thats BS or not. anyways we shall see

I would not stress about oil being in places its not supposed to. When the engines are removed, stored in japan, packed on a container and shipped oversea they tend to end up in all sorts of unnatural angles so oil ends up everywhere. Change the oil and filter, flush the cooling system and give it a good run to get it settled. chances are it will blow smoke and crap out until you get it nice and warm. A good long run should help get it all sorted.

Then drop the oil and filter after the first 100k's so you get rid of any crap that got inside it.

To carry on from this, the gen2/3 got a single turbo and a microtech and ended up melting a piston
Then it was replaced with another gen2, blew a headgasket and destroyed a couple of pistons, runnig about 25psi
This was replaced with a motor made out of the good bits from the previous two motors just to get it on the road to pass rego. It ran sort of alright but used a bit of oil.
It was removed to be replaced with a very healthy gen3 that ran for a bit over a year on 20psi doing about 100kms everyday. It made 245kw at the wheels. It eventually blew a headgasket
Reaplaced with another gen 3 that bit the dust after about 500kms of driving with a rod hanging out the sump

So now the car sits with no engine cause im so over 1G's

    1st 1G - Blown Rear turbo, lost Compression on No.6 and No.1

2nd 1G - Broken No.6 piston, non existant bottom end bearing.

    3rd 1G - BHG

4th 1G - was going strong when sold.

I have heard that the factory intake manifold flows a few CFM less on runners 1 and 6 which may explain broken pistons and bearing damage.

I believe it was 6Boost that discovered this.

    Cheers

    P.S. 18R-G's are more reliable.
