my first 1g lasted about 7 years done a single turbo conversion and blew a head gasket on the dyno, then bought another import and dropped it in with the single turbo and done another head gasket on the dyno, pulled the head off too be machined and got another head gasket and put it back on the dyno, went down too wisid the next week and managed to put a hole in number six piston.

since these dramas the motor has been fully rebuilt with forged pistons all new bearings the motors been fully balanced, added a hks metal head gasket ect,
as someone above mentioned about the the intake not flowing even amounts of air on all 6 runners, i also had my plenum power ported, you can find the results on here somewhere if you do a search
    cheers steve,

my first 1gge i spun big end .....sold that motor stuffed to JCMO

did the swap to 1ggte.......then...... i blew pretty much every heater hose

then i blew HG..... fun fun ....replaced it with top HG kit from Stewart Wilkins motorsport

i sold it in april 07 about 3 months after replacing the HG, and it's still running around today

1gs limits are ten times better than 18rgs though. And they take way more abuse than 18rgs take my word for it i know. I had a good 18rg for a while and sold it on. After that a year or so later i had a friend who decided to get into them and modify them a bit.

1st motor no mods bottom end went
2nd motor no mods bottom end again (blew somthing out the side of the block)
3rd motor more money spent all reconditioned twin solex carbs (A real pain in the arse to tune) and other mods went fine and so it was sold. Havnt seen it since? Im guessing the guy that got it has buggered that one as well from giving shit!

Performance mods from them is just a waste of time and money unless the get modified severly to supercharged or turbocharged. (You cant really expect much more than 80 odd rwkws out of them without doing forged internals, turbo etc etc etc.

In saying this none of the less they are a good wee motor for reliable run about engine but not to give a hiding every day like the 1gs.

Also the EFI 18rgs are way better performance stock than the carbed ones, and as soon as you try and put slightly lumper cams on the carbed ones they have no low down torgue at all compared to the EFI versions from factory! Thats why my friend should have stuck with EFI unstead of changing to twin sidedraughts on it.

One thing everyone needs to remember is that these are all old motors. Not only do the gaskets go soft in them but they have usually had 15 years of absolutely no maintenance in Japan before they arrive in Aus. We then fill em with fully synthetic oil that is loaded with detergents. All the cruddy baked on oil inside the engine is hit with this detergent and starts to come away. It's no wonder the big end bearings and turbos fail, the oil holes in em are tiny.

Added to that, they are almost all put into different cars with modifications to sumps, cooling efficiency etc and still expected to produce 50-100% more power than they could brand new out of the box.

On the topic of oils, what do you guys use.

I was using the oil that my Father (a Mechanic) swears by. It is the Anglomoil Gold it is a mineral based oil with only mild detergents I think it was a 10w40. The oil served his customers well for many years. None of the cars he serviced regularly every had oil related problem, except for my 1G but as said before there were many contribution factors in that engines demise. Unfortunately I don't think the oil is commercially available......

My father had definite opinions on many brands of oil, some of which he wouldn't use on a push bike.

I would be interested to know what oils you have been running in these busted 1G's, and likewise for all thoes with 1G's that have run reliably for any length of time what they are using.

My 1G has copped my driving for around 35000km, during that time it's had Castrol Magnatec 10w40, Mobil Synth S 10w40 and most recently, Penrite HPR10 10w50. It's been to the drags about 5 times, a motorkhana, on the dyno for ages when tuning as well as a few dyno comps, and driven across Australia. The only thing I did was religiously change the oil and filter every 5000km.

I ve had my 1g for a couple of years and done around 15,000ks now and ever since the day i got it, every six months its had Castrol Magnetec 10-40 put in it. Ive had no problems so far and believe that its a good oil for them. Also every time i do a oil change i put some STP engine flush through it as well, and change filter.
