Valve clearance could be the culprit? I still can't find that hideous rattle in my engine.. It's become noticeably worse so I'm leaning towards one of the timing chains, or something in that area... Not good!

Will having valve clearance that is significantly out have a noticeable effect on performance? Say a weaker section of the rev-range?

    Cheers,

The trick in this heads is the valve clearance, thing is that the heads are very tricky, a simple valve job in these heads can take the clearances off a little and if not done properly could make it rattle and trow off the performance of the engine, as well as a simple rectification or head shave will set the timing off.

I should qualify that statement with the head has stainless steel valves and bronze guides.

Hey guys, is it possible to machine off one of the ribs on the harmonic balancer? I know some people who have done it with 1g's but unsure if it can apply to our engines? I need to make some clearance for the gilmer drive pulley and every cm is going to count.

    cheers

Why not use a 2tc balancer it fits perfectlly and only comes with one groove for a belt or even better get a BRD aluminum one they are cheap.

Isn't there rubber insulation between the outer groves and inner part of the balancer?

    Nath,

Why do you need to keep any of the V bands if your running the Gilmer belt ?

And if you space it out that far how are you lining it up on your water pump and alternator ? It will be sitting way out front.

    Toyota1515,

The 2T and 2T-G do not have a harmonic balancer, only a crank pulley and the timing marks are in a different location. You can of course remark it with a new timing mark or use the 2T-G timing cover.

I know but it fits for what he needs, when doing custom setups dont expect everything will fit perfectly without modifying a little, it shouldn't be that bad to re-mark the 3t or 2t balancer.

I think you will find the point is he wants to keep the Harmonic Balancer. So he can ONLY use a 3T-GTE one.

Hey mate I was under the impression that I had to keep this balancer on if a car came out with one standard? What are the downfalls of taking it off and just putting the pulley on in its place?

With the current set up I was going to get a 25mm spacer milled up to go over the the existing WP and the alternator can be moved forward pretty easily from first inspection so that doesnt look too bad. All up its pushing the whole lot 25mm more toward the radiator than the furthest point on the old WP. So if I make a 30mm crossflow rad it should just squeeze in.The other problem is that the crank pulley is originally for a small block chev so I need something to bolt it to to make work as it has nothing to center it.

If I can just wack a pulley on instead of the retaining the existing HB then I will just get the place in NZ that makes them to do me one up from from scratch, they are only $500 nz which is about 40 bucks these days

What you mean buddy? Dont get it!
If he wants he can use the 2T with a single groove and didnt trow the balance away, i have done it many times without any issue.
