    question:

Stock alternator rebuilt in 2009 for $450.
Same alternator has travelled 5000km and is stuffed again.

I dont want to rebuild it again, what other alternator can I use in place of the standard one? Preferably one that is easily replaceable.. like a falcon or something?

and what mods are required to fit said replacement

FJ20 landcruiser - you need to convert to a round plug and the pulley needs to be swapped over because the landcruiser uses a larger section V belt.
    YelloRolla's KE20 1/4mi = 11.32 @ 119mph @ 22psi on slicks
    12.44 @ 113 mph on 165 wide street tyres
210rwkw - not bad for a smelly 3TGTE running pump fuel.

i have use one like this. stock bottom mounting is direct fit and belt is in line !! only needed to use shorter bolt, upper adjusting mounting had to cut and make longer, (maybe couple mm washer to somewhere) to get upper also to line, i have cut 2 and weld them together, look like stock. then wirings, they are easy...

pretty easy.. also some never A series alternator with Changing pulley, are "direct fit" like these.

these save lot of space and weight unless historical wehicle, i recommend to change alternator type.

    thanks for the information
from what i understand the stock 3T alternator is 45amp ?
I read it's better to go for a higher amp if you're running a few things.

That ebay link is for a 50amp alt. YellowRolla, what amperage is the FJ20 alternator?
And how easy is it to change over the pulley? or do i have to pull apart/bastardize both alternators?

btw, just read this on the FJ20 alt's, wondering how they perform when getting rev'd.

Steeko - I don't remember the ampere rating of the alternator; I only remember that it was more than stock.
The pulley is swapped in about 14 seconds with rattle gun.
I have not been in a 3T GTE that was more rev happy than mine, and I had the alternator on there for years.

sweet man, that's what I'm looking for longevity, as this is my daily driver.
Can the FJ20 alternator be purchased new? Like Bosch etc? or do i have to find a second handy to be rebuilt?

I bought my alternator from a 4x4 wrecking yard, swapped pulleys, the auto leccy fitted a plug same afternoon and I never looked at it again.

Called the auto electrician. The internal regulator was still charging but was being irratic, so they've replaced it under warranty.

Apparently I have an aftermarket Bosch alternator which has been modified to fit and is a 65amp alt.

So looks like i may be back on the road soon

Just about had enough of MLS head gaskets not sealing and I know others (turbotoy) have commented on how painful they can be. I have had two leak so far pushing water out the radiator cap to the overflow generally underboost (intially anyway). Running around 22psi (last tune) latest tune running 18psi (180rwkw using gt28rs and 38mm restrictor, still a little to go but i need to change my map sensor). I have talked to a few other racers using the cometic stuff having similar issues. I have had the head machined twice and used hylomer spray.

Most people I have spoken with seem to be getting away with composite gaskets (standard/felpro) with head studs running up to 26psi boost, so I am think about going this route for now. I have an 87mm bore, the only gasket I have come up with is a cometic 87mm 2tg CFM-20 gasket, does anyone know of any others (besides MLS) that come in 87mm bore.

I could 'o' ring the head whilst it is off, is this a done thing with standard gaskets?

The key to MLS is in the machining and surface roughness. I used a copper head gasket with o-rings. You could try some black rtv around the water jacket holes but you have to be very careful and use very little (apply with syringe). That is what I did to keep it from leaking.

k so how hard would it be for me to fit a ct26 assuming i can find a single entry ct26, or not bother and get a twin entry and new custom exhaust manifold?? im running the watercooled ct20 on 16psi.... yes it get cherry red, but i want to fit a ct26 to the ol 3tgte! if i could afford a gt30 i would just saying... i want to run 18psi all day reliably whereas the ct20 would cook the oil and itself lol... note my car has a decent avo intercooler sitting nicely behind the front bumper too

any help would be great please im all ears to decent knowledge

For me if I were to make a custom exhaust I would go with a different turbo. You should be able to find a single entry ct26. That is a popular upgrade for the ct20. You could also look at porting the stock manifold (exhaust and turbine housing) that will help. You could also make a plate adapter to fit a T3 flange to the factory manifold I have done that as well.

With a T3 adaptor spoken about above you could run a 12A mazda turbo at 24psi with wastegate permantly closed. You would have to make sure your tune is good for a standard engine.
