Use the oil weight and viscosity specified by the manufacturer. As for which brand is "best", you'll get about 200 different answers - just go with whatever you're comfortable with. As long as you change the oil regularly and use genuine filters you can't really go wrong.

for a 1UZ?
hm.. my corolla filter retails for 22 ish... i noticed different dealers have slightly different prices though.. (it's a Ryco Z386 equivalent) .,.. definitely cheaper at trade / mates rates

Toobs said there is nothing wrong with the Ryco ones either.

there isnt...
my oil looked just as dirty after i swapper out the genuine filter as it did with the ryco swap.
that said, the ryco one did cause me a massive headache after the sealing rubber ring was left on the block and i didnt see, started the motor up and oil went all over my driveway!!
rushed oil changes and parents yelling at ya = loss of concentration FTL!
Haha, I wish I couldn't relate to that. I did exactly the same thing, the dude at Repco was wondering why I was back for more oil an hour after I left, and this was just before my massive road trip.

I use HPR15 in my 1UZ.
I have also done the same thing with the rubber ring except I noticed the old filter didnt have it on while I was cleaning up, thankfully I didn't start the car because I was parked on my lawn hehe.
Use a genuine filter, internally they provide a huge surface area increase over ryco. Even if they cost $100 (and we know they don't), this amount every 5000km is still cheap insurance. Look after your UZ and it'll do 400,000km no probs.
Any fully synth will do the job, as Norbie says, just get the oil weight right...a little thinner in fully synth won't hurt.
Skimping on oil changes, quality and filters is the number one false economy

agreed, toyota genuine filters are cheap i know the 4ag ones are like $15 trade and the big one i use on my hilux is only $17 or there abouts. given toyota only have about half a dozen filter types they share between engines just suck up the $17 and buy the right product. and you should be able to get trade, any financil member of toymods get trade and most other car clubs then to have similar arangements
