I had my car resprayed and while I'm more than satisfied with the finish and overall workmanship I suffer quite badly from stone chips. I asked my spray painter (work colleague) about it and was pretty much told there is nothing I can do, its down to the paint and primer used and I should of let him get the paint instead of me blindly picking a brand (protec). I dont really doubt the workmanship as I visited him a few times and he spent a lot of hours getting the body right.


Has anyone else had issues with stone chips? I do drive on a lot of country roads though I'll be dropping by his place tomorrow as I need to get a bumper resprayed from the asshole that spiderwebbed it so I'll pick his mind about it.

I've used Protec paint a few times and have found that the clear doesn't stick to the colour very well (sprayed over fresh metallic). The colour didn't stick to the undercoat very well.

It's a pain in the arse how easily their acrylic chips, but it's easier to fix as all layers don't come off in one shot.

The last lot of spraying I did seemed to have the clear stick to the colour ok.

Got my Celica painted on the weekend. I'm SOOOO chuffed!! Apart from numerous bugs and a couple of specks of dust, it is only runs in the clear which are a pain in the tail. There are 3 good coats of clear on though, and I have access to a special tool for cutting the runs out (tungsten carbide item), so will be able to clean it all up once it sets properly. I'll put up photos later. It will eventually need to be cut and polished due to said runs and bugs, but presently gives a mirror-ish finish.

The clear was Dulux 2k 2:1 high solid.

Hi all,

I need some help figuring out what too do with my TA22, I brought it in primer (has paint underneath the primer), the car WAS painted yellow (dont know factory colour), I can tell it was a home job as there is overspray on everything in the engine bay. I went over the body with a speaker magnet to try pick up where bog would be, suprisingly I didnt find anything around the front and rear windows or around the doors ect. The only rust i have found is on the passengers side bottom part of the rear and front windscreens, the only bog is on the passengers fender (closest too the door).
I want this car too be painted devil yellow like the 2004 monaros, I went to auto1 and got a quote for 4 litres of acrylic and they said $189bucks.. some thing tells me that is heaps sh*t quality, I thought itd be atleast $500 for 4 litres.

I wish I could do the respray myself but I dont have the equipment, experience or room to do it. Could people who have been in the same situation please tell me what they did to get it sprayed, costs ect. Anyone please feel free to help me out.

"Concept" brand paint at VG is about $130 for 4 litres.. but it does depend on what pigments/amounts are used for that mix.

Make sure you prime in a light colour, preferably white or yellow, if you are going to paint yellow and want it to be bright.

Hiring a spray booth could be an option, I believe OldCorollas has a professional quality one in his backyard which he has done a Corolla in

Seriously though, I have open air sprayed cars in acrylic and enamel before. Not too unpleasant, so if you have yard space, then one of those portatents could be the go. As for the lack of equipment and ability, about $300 will buy all the equipment suitable for a one off job, and you will get the experience pretty quickly doing it yourself. Go down the library (that funny thing your rates pay for which lets you borrow paper based products called books...) and borrow a book on spray painting. It's free even.

Don't expect a perfect job, but also don't expect the high cost of paying somebody to do a poor job (because that's what your budget will more than likely get you).

Hey Owen,

Cheers for the advice. Say I was to do it myself, how should I go about it, paint the car with all the panels on, take trims off and cover the windscreens ect and other nick nacks with tape and newspaper/plastic. Then spray the whole car as a whole, or take the panels off and spray. I'm not looking for a show car job just something thats better then having primer on my car.

The further you strip it down, the better the job will be, but the longer it will take. Up to you if you have the time to put that effort in.

Probably sand it back to remove the primer as I dont know what type of primer it is, I've read that its best to use 2pac primer rather then Acrylic primer, is that true?

Either will work. 2k is better, but you can't spray it open air, you have to have a closed shed/booth. Check under the primer for spiders starting in the lower layers of paint though. Probably worth stripping the paint down to metal on the big areas to prevent the existing minute surface corrosion from becoming major rust later.

Went and watched my workmate fix my other workmates VE HSV clubsport as he needed a stone chip fixed (size of a 5c coin) as he has a car show on Saturday. Didn't have time (few hours) to properly paint the whole front guard and didn't want to mask everything in the shed so acrylic primer, 2k base and acrylic clear was used, in the end what looked like nearly the whole front guard ended up getting something sprayed on it and it looked identical to everything else but this dodgy trick only lasts about a year before you can tell it aint 2k clear Not that it matters, will be back next week to get it done properly but it goes to show what you can do when you have a fucking clue.

Got quoted $4500 for paint job for my car with some rust repair, so out of my budget. Fully contemplating spraying it with spray cans, how bad can it really look?!

Well the rust repair is prob what is costing the most. I'd suggest you DIY the rust repair and then find a smash repairer to do your painting job.

Also buy your own paint for it.
