SHEPPO3930, dont do it man, that is a waste of a good pair of bumpers. A good chrome TA22 bumper is worth big dollars. Reconditioned bars are at least $380.00 each exchange! Find some crappy old bumpers if you must paint them!

Now that that is out of the way/off my chest, find some hydrochloric acid (drain a couple of old car batteries( Full face mask and gloves required)) and apply that to the chrome, this will etch small pits into the chrome and promote good adhesion of your etch coat. 180 grit would be way too savage on the bar and would show through your paint layers as scratch marks. somewhere between 320 and 800 is where you need to be before applying primer. Other than that your product list and process seems fine.

    cheers Chuck.

hey guys, ive got a question that i cant seem to get a straight answer on so i thought id as here..

Ive got a bonnet that ive sprayed in acrylic, it has been on about 3 different cars... and ive sprayed it in acrylic every time...(note; theres alot of paint on it lol)

now i want to spray it 2pac... how do i got about this...

ive had a talk to some tradies and some say it cant be done, i need to strip it ALL off and undercoat with a 2pac primer and others have said give it a sand, prime it with single pac primer and 2pac over the top???

any idea what way to go?? i dont really want to strip it all as theres alot of paint on there, bonnet will be used until i sell the car so the paint sticking long term isnt a worry lol

    Cheers, Jai.

You should have come here first. We're all experts! (just kidding)

This in itself is a bit of a problem. So many layers of paint - at least you were the painter so the quality should be consistent and you know what's on it!

Why? what are you hoping to achieve by switching now? Unique colour? Better shine?

If I was going to give one quick answer then this would be it.

Why? It all comes down to the chemistry of the respective paints.

Acrylic - dries through evaporation and dries hard

2Pac - dries through a chemical reaction between an agent or catalyst and the base paint. Dries soft. Requires heat or baking.

Now if you put a soft paint over a hard paint, on a hot day the soft paint will want to "move around" on the metal. These tradies are trying to tell you that by painting 2Pac over acrylic your paint will eventually form cracks. Hence the need to completely strip the acrylic from the metal.

Many of the new water-based 2Pacs can be painted over a 1K primer. It's cheaper but I'm not convinced the long term quality will be maintained but who knows! Many shops are doing it.

Then just paint it with acrylic - its heaps cheaper and when done correctly and buffed looks pretty good.

    Cheers,

Thanks for the responce Peter, the main reason i want to go 2pac is the hardness i guess... underbonnet temp on my gt4 are stupid hot and has caused the current acrylic topcoat to orange peal and just look crap around the turbo area... when i first sprayed it, it was super glossy after a wet sand and buff..maybe 4-5 months after it started orange pealing so i took it off before it got any worse....

maybe i should just spray it acrylic again, and put it back on when im about to sell.... hmmm

Jai, from my personal use of paints, I suggest the following,

Quick sand with 800 wet to get an even surface and to knok down any orange peel.

Apply a coat of primer, single pak or 2 pak, it does not matter. The single pak will act as a neutral barrier between your underlying acrylic.

Wet sand the primer with 800, then shoot a colour coat of 2pak, or Clear On Base (COB) this is an acrylic single pack colour coat that is compatable with 2pak. Final coat is one of 2pak clear.

    cheers Chuck.

This is a good alternative, also used by quite a few panel shops lately. Again, it keeps costs down and you end up with a decent finish. But remember, it'll only be as good as your prep work.

i'm a noob with painting, so excuse the question...

why would you paint the bonnet in 2k and leave the rest of the car in acrylic? makes no sense to have the one car painted in multiple paint systems? is this common practice?

smackdown.exc - if you have heat issues, fit some ACL heat shielding (ACL Race Series Heat Shield Material) to the underside of the bonnet, problem solved. this stuff is fantastic and when screwed to the underside of the bonnet structure, leaving a small air gap, will easily stop the paint on the bonnet from being damaged.

sorry should have mentioned, rest of the car is 2pac, i got a spare bonnet and moulded a scoop into it and wasnt confident at the time and sprayed it with acrylic time and time again lol..

Thanks for the link Sheppo, it actually has something that looks very similar underneath that i took off of a newer model holden... might not be the same stuff so i might look into it!

    Cheers.

Yes you can indeed get ISO free. Ask around your local paint shops to see who can supply what.

Both SCA and REPCO sold the ISO-Free paints but not anymore. It seems to have disappeared off the shelves about 18 months ago.

    Opinions?

Someone rear ended me the other day, wanted to know if anyone with experience knows if this can be repaired (plastic weld etc) or if its basically a new bumper that is needed? The support bracket has gone straight through the bumper below the number plate.

Yep can definitely be repaired, plastic welded would be the best way.

If you don't go through insurance (preferred repairer etc) then I can put you in touch with a company that can fix it for you.

As for your number plate however...

so plastic weld is the best method, any other methods which repairers might try and do which i should make sure to stay away from? Maybe they might try a flexible filler of some sort or something like this.

Yeh clearly number plate will need to be replaced haha. The dufus who hit me is gonna pay for it the way i want it done or ill just go insurance
