what about after you bolt the spacers on you cover the ridge with body filler to make it look like part of the wheel

The question remains to be asked:

Why not buy wheels that fit your car in the first place?!?!

Gibbon, John Wilson engineered my 1JZ-GTE '23 with spacers. I drilled and tapped 4 small holes into the rim. Used countersunk head machine screws, and countersunk the new holes in the spacers. Loctite was applied to the threads on assembly.

Went over Dickson with no probs.

    cheers Chuck.

Go to a decent alloy wheel repair place, and they should be able to alter the rims to suit just fine...

He did my car as well - I'm seeing him on Monday arvo to talk about it. He only seemed worried about the amount of thread on the bolts ratio.....

Personally I wouldn't be comfortable with threads tapped into an aluminium wheel (aluminium fatigues at any load and is weaker than your steel hubs, nuts and studs).

I would much prefer to have the spacer welded on, given that it is welded in the correct manner (ie the weld is stronger than the surrounding material). It would probably be cheaper to buy new wheels than to have 4 properly welded up and engineered though.

I have no idea about legalities but are bolt on spacers legal? (as opposed to a spacer sandwiched between the wheel and hub), I would prefer this over the spacer bolted to the tapped wheel also.

or maybe the alloy wheel repair places as suggested, they do weld alloys...

Custom hub could be an option, depends on how much you like the wheels.

The bolts holding the spacer to the wheel aren't under any load at all, they are just there to make sure that the spacer stays with the wheel. As I said earlier welding will cause internal stresses in the wheel and can cause all sorts of weirdness (particularly on the hub). I'd have no problem with a bolt on (or slip on) spacer*, but I would be very dubious about a car with welded hubs on the wheels..

Bolt the spacers too the wheels, then your done. It is legal and you will pass....
PHOBIA has 20mm spaces bolted to the wheels, and I’ve never had a drama with legality issues.

20mm?? Damn, I assume the spacers locate on both the hub and the wheel as well?

Sure do mate. They where made for my wheels and hubs. I bought and fitted 18's to the Corona 8 years ago, so im sure you can appreciate, there wasn't a great deal available for the car, so the custom spacer root was taken to be able to fit decent wheels.

Out of curiosity, how well do your wheel bearings stand up to the extra load?

I did the fronts about 6 months ago, out of maintenance. They where 10 years old and to be honest, I could have repacked them and run them again.
Having said that, the car doesn’t do a great deal of klms, but they seem to handle it fine. The back are also fine and with the bags and IRS set up giving crazy rear camber, that is more than hard enough on em.
