oh, and the M series motors BHG probs are a result of the motor being whored out by generation upon generation being bored/stroked to its absoloute limits.

    *awaits jokes about stroking

So explain the fact that all 7MGE's blow the head gasket just as often then?
    I think I've heard of 1 or 2 7MGE's that have reached 200,000 without popping a HG.
Thats a pretty bad NA record.

Where as I've only heard of very very few 5MGE's ever blowing HG's, and the ones that have blown where usually due to poor maintenance, or very high km's.

I have thus come up with these figures on your chances of blowing a HG
    7MG(T)E - 95%
    5MGE - 10%
    5ME - 30%
5MTE - 95% (unless you use MTEU dizzy)

andrew, eldar pretty much explained it with the whole boring out thingo above.

i however have a different theory.

7MGE's are usually located in the engine bay of MX83's. The market demographic for MX83 drivers are pensioners and retirees.

Pensioners and Retirees unfortunately are under the mentality that the world owes them a living, and needs to do everything they say because of it. Thus, in similar light they also expect their cars to do the same and do not understand the concept of 'servicing a vehicle'. This is a relatively unexplored territory for many of them, and 'car mods' in pensioner-speak roughly translates to 'bowls-hat-on-rear-parcelshelf'. They somehow think that a car will magically run if you put petrol in it, and are unfamilar with concepts such as 'oil' or 'coolant' or even 'automatic transmission fluid' (Yay for clunky A34x's!). Thus saying 'Blown Head Gasket' to them is like saying 'Kraaak Illl Spuugg Nerr Nooorrggg' to me in Klingon. Whilst it sounds cool, I still have the undying urge to punch the trekkie in the face.

btw cedric, there were no 5MGTE/6MGTE's from factory. From what i know this is lower stroked bore engines with a modified 7M manifold and turbo attached. And yes i've seen a 5MGTE pop under 11psi as well.

    ok,

so in the case that i purchase teh 1JZ off clint

    i would need.
    a: What crossmember?
    b: What mounts?
c: What else (fuel pump, ecu etc etc etc etc)

In the case i purchase the 5MGE (or a whole MX73)

    i would need:
Nothing as i would just simply plonk the X73 Crossmember + engine + front brake setup into the X71 bodge up a fuel sys using the tank and piping from the MX73 run all the loom taht was in the MX73 through the firewall , connect the ECU and there we go !

There is a MX73 in teh quokka today for $550 Unlic 180,000kms

1JZ swap would be the same as in an MA61, so either get Bonneville engine mounts (or equivalent), or modify the crossmember Norbie-style. The rest would be standard turbo engine swap stuff. Overall it would be pretty easy to do, but WAY more effort than plonking in a 5M/6M.

I understand your liking of the X71, however the effort involved in the coversion when the car is just a daily, PERSONALLY I dont see the benefit, going from carb to EFI also increases the difficulty of the conversion.

Dont get me wrong Im sure it will do fine as a daily but the costs compared to just using the mx73....?

Anyone who has experience with engine swaps could do this in a weekend so it's not a lot of effort, and cost would be a few consumables and not much else. If this was my daily I'd do it for sure!

im with coffee on this one! the value of buying a MX73 for 500 and doing the swap far FAR out weights the benefit and cost of a 1jz... plus how may X71's are there in OZ... a far few less than the good old X73 thats for sure!!!

and then its jsut a short hop skip and jump to the glory of the 6M

MX83 crossmember bolts straight in, Just have to weld washers over the bolt holes for the suspension arms to reduce the size to suit the x71 arm bolts.
