Nah! Havent checked cam timing! I should, where can I find the specs for that? Valve clearance's wernt perfect but okay enough...
it can cause emissions probs and wall wetting but not bad enough to cause these kinds of probs.Originally Posted by ONCE-NA

put the crank at 0 and check the marks on the cam gears, they should line up with the marks on the cover behind the gears. should be some pics around here (toymods).
do this first as otherwise you'll be chasing your tail for no reason.

Okay cool thanks man
Yeah they all line up! Even leaning it out to high 12's at higher RPM causes rougher running and popping etc out the exhaust. And I have found another problem that may or may not be linked, stand by for pics...
There is a crack at the side of the head, its hard to describe the location (gotta wait for my g/f to get home with the camers) The crack was repaired (welded) at some stage before I had this motor but it apears to have opened again, we only noticed this as a little oil seeped onto the exhaust manifold flange and smoked up. I'm thinking maybe the crack extends further than it looks into combustion chamber or exhaust port) and it could explain oil vapor comming out of the cam cover vent and (what I think is excessive case pressure when I remove the oil cap when running. Having done a compression test today all cylinders were even 170 psi except for number 1 which was only 5 psi down and well within tolerance. Though this crack is near number 1.
thats horrible man, gw told me... real sorry to hear about that! i hope that someone didn't do a dodgy on you![]()
hmmm, not sure dude if your only down 5psi it shouldnt make that much of a difference.
what do you call excessive case pressure? if you hold you hand near the cap you will always feel big pulses, try sealing the cap with the palm of your hand and if you only feel pulses it should be fine but if you feel it trying to push your hand off with pressure built up then there is something wrong.
id really have to see what its doing to give more suggestions as im stumped.

I rekon my best bet would be to source another head, gen 2 or even better a gen 3 if they are directly interchangeable, and swap the cams and maybe the valves and springs etc. seeing as this head has been repaired once before and has cracked again and I don't trust it at all I want to get something quick and get the dam thing going and going right.
unfortunately the manifolds are different but if your after a gen3 send me a pm.

Thanks anyway
Was this the 'built' motor or the old stockie?

this really sucks man, really really sucks.
justen to answer your question because rod is at work: this was the 'built' motor that was supposedly fully rebuilt etc. I went with rod to get it from nsw and was there yesterday when we found the crack in the head...

No probs, i know nothing of the built motor. I did all my work with the original stockie which was untouched.
