I don't have confirmation, but I have heard that some 3SGE blocks had oil squirters...
Hey guys,
I have finally brought home the 3S-GTE that I purchased a few months back and I have noticed a few differences between the 3S block that's been bored and honed, and a spare 3S block that I also have...
Both blocks have the holes for the oil squirters, so they're both 3S-GTE blocks (as far aas I'm aware off), but the block that has been bored and honed is missing the oil feed hole for the turbo, and has some extra mounting holes which I'm hoping will assist with RWD mounting...
Anyway, as they say, "A picture tells a thousand words...", so here's my 4 thousand word essay!![]()
Inlet side - Block A
Inlet side - Block B
Exhaust side - Block A
Exhaust side - Block B
How am I going to feed the oil to the turbo???
I don't have confirmation, but I have heard that some 3SGE blocks had oil squirters...
No way that is a 3sgte block.
Still, can feed turbo from the oil pressure sensor port off the back of the head. Ended up doing that on my RWD 3SGTE

So the work that has been done to it isn't wasted then?
Pretty well the turbo oil feed would be the only issue (or as you said, just use the oil sensor port) between the two, is that right?
Also, is what XR Pilot says true? Even some 3S-GEs have oil squirters...
The block isn't quite as strong and if you're using the n/a crank it may only be 6 bolt rather than the GTE 8 bolt? I'm not up on all the differences between the GE and GTE but by all accounts they are very similar....once you get to the GEN III they are virtually identical.

It's definately a GTE crank...
All the bits are from tthe GTE, the block was just purchased seperately and bored to suit the Forgies I have... (Done by previuos owner...)
As long as it's not a 5SFE you'll be OK

What generations are the blocks? The gen 1 GE and GTE has the same crank, gen 2 and 3 share the same crank I believe, and the gen 1/2 GE/GTE rods are the same, so as such there is no GTE crank. Fairly certain thats how it works, I can get the part numbers to confirm it later, too tired now.
I think it is either gen 2 or 3 onwards GE's have oil squirters? I can't remember, but I read something about it once before.
I'm almost 100% sure that the big bolt in the larger white circle in that above diagram is the feed for the oil return banjo-bolt. I know because I spent friggin ages chasing one down for my turbo conversion in the RAV, and that was a block out of an ST185.Originally Posted by twentyEight
This was my block just after it was painted.. I was hunting one of these bolts for it, and if I remember correctly it was something like a 26mm thread or something stupid, but I just know that it was hard to get a hold of because no one knew what it was! but that's almost certainly where the oil return line goes.
Hope that helps... a bit..![]()
Yeah I realise that... That why I know that Block A is missing it...
But thanks ayhoo...
bugger... well at least those two smaller holes on either side are going to be good for a RWD conversion... I remember seeing clemo55's AE86 last week and seeing how he's mounted his 3rd Gen 3S-GE up, custom split-tubes for mounts extending off the crossmember, looked pretty damn sturdy. although I believe those holes would have to have been re-tapped to something more accommodating and befitting of mounts, like 17mm or something. should have taken photos...

green area: the bolt holes are for the engine to N-S cross member mount on fwd cars. for cars with 4wd boxes the rwd transfer case hits that area hence they dont have those bolt holes. the two on the right of them are for the DS driveshaft, inner half shaft bearing.
The green bolt holes, those ones that are identical to the right hand side, would these be the ones that are used for RWD S series engine mounts ? Block A appears to be the best ?
matt - see my post above... I believe that all four of these holes on either side would be choice for mounts in an N-S / RWD fashion for the ol' 3S.
saw Jason and his AE86 again today, and he's of the same opinion as Justen, get the oil feed from the oil pressure sensor port in the head. not much other choice.
Block B looks identical to the 3sge Redtop Beams motor that I stripped down and are using in my KE25 3sgte beams conversion.
It has oil squirters from the factory and if you want to save some weight and aren't using some of the bosses, grind them off. We saved about 250grams (which isn't much but everything adds up) in about 4 or 5 bosses that we don't need in the race car. Its also weight that is right out the front of the car.
Cheers,
Dave
