If you want to get the old (and now) stuffed bearing out, you can hydraulic it.

To do this pack in behind with grease, then get a drift or rod that will fit neatly through the hold and smack it a few times with a hammer. You may need to repack the grease a couple of times as the bearing starts to come out.

Just get a new Bearing, they are like $5......

You can then re-pack it with grease, but put the cover back on it otherwise you may get grease thrown onto the clutch disc which won't be good for Friction........

And like has already been said, clean the bore up well, put it in the oven set @ Max temperature for 1 hour, then use one of your Fingers to hold/position/slide the Bearing into place, and have some long nose pliers on hand to hold it down in place as you slide your finger out.

Removing the crank putting that in the oven to fit a spigot bearing?
Sounds like too much hard work, if it doesnt go in relatively easily you are doing something wrong. Applies to most things - cars, electronics, computers, wo...

Are you sure you havent left the outer race from the old spigot bearing in there?

The race from spigot bearings dont seperate overly easily from the casing. Infact they are machined such that the inner race + outer race + ball bearing > bearing thickness, hence no falling apart.

Anyway, just give the inside a nice sand, chuck the new bearing in the freezer overnight and then pop it in square. Youll find it easier to tap in with a dowel or a piece of wood to square it up, and the last bit you shoudl tap in with the old bearing to set it down nicely.

Heating the crank in the oven = too much effort, i agree.

The flywheel has never had a bearing fitted to it. Its off a fwd engine. I'll get a new bearing tomorrow and chill it, clean it with some sandpaper and heat the crank up a bit with the heat gun. it should work then. fingers crossed.

well mine did after trying the hydralic method of removing the spigot - grease everywhere, grease covers pushed out.

i had to yank the mofo out with my slide hammer.

I didn't say hydraulicking the bearing out wouldn't be messy, and yes the grease seals can pop out. It does work best on solid bush type spigots, but I have removed roller bearings using this technique.

Some Toyotas do have the spigot fitted to the flywheel. Altezza is one that springs to mind, but that is a 3SGE.

    WOW.
If it's that close, then it's the right size.
The bore it presses into MUST be clean & smooth, with a little lube, and and you've GO TO pound it in STRAIGHT the first time, with no cocking/misalignment that'll bend/twist its outer race & may not straighten itself out. Any old FF/FWD crank probably needs some polishing up, and emery cloth/aluminum oxide will do fine.

The bashed in grease/dust covers MAY be OK, or MAY be rubbing on the bearings cage & putting chewed up plastic bits into the grease. This bearing is over-engineered & doesn't get much use, but it still needs to roll smoothly without a hint of jamming. IF it doesn't, or even if it does, they're cheap - replace it.

I'd stay away from anyone who writes about flywheels & heating, and even the fridge stuff.

Freezing and heating things is fairly common practice for interference fit bits. Especially when its something as small as a spigot bearing. Chucking it in the freezer overnight would give a poofteenth extra clearance to pop it in.
Dont be heating the flywheel or crank though, way way way too much effort.

Thanks for all the tips everyone. For anyone that is interested i got a new bearing this morning and fitted it in! All went pretty well

This is how i went about it:
    1. I used some 800wet and dry and cleaned the bore of the crank.
    2. Put the bearing in the freezer. (this is a good trick, also heating some things works really well.) I rebuilt the bottom end of my two stroke dirtbike and heating and freezing the bearings and crank casing's worked so well.
    3. Sprayed a bit of wd40 in.
    4. Used a socket and tapped it in.
