bkr7e i think are a good plug say to around 250rwkw gapped to .8
bcpr6e once you start going over that power, gapping depending on your set up.

we have now gone to a race plug.

I bought the BCPR6e's but ended up using 7's. I pulled the BKR7's and checked them last night with magnifying glass and the discolouring on the ground strap was right on the bend which means that the heat range and ignition timing is basically spot on. Because of this I decided to go with the 7's. If the discolouration is close to the end then the plug is too cold and if it is close to the base (ie near the threaded area) then it is too hot.

What's a round about figure on new coils from Toyota? Scary expensive, or just expensive?

They have coil on plug don't they? Or is it only 3 coils? Either way, will get you a price tomorrow. I'd say scary expensive though.

You should be able to get them for $125 each! I got mine a little cheaper

ive had good experiences with
BKR6E @ .8 (tempory plug)
BKR6EIX @ .8 (went for 38,000 kms @ 1 bar and over before they started misfiring, started off as a high rpm miss then just went downhill over 3 months or more)
BKR7EIX @ .73 (current plug, has seen 20 psi and is currently the best performer with my setup)

I had BKR7E with my normal set up. Stock I dropped back to a BKR5E with the everything stock and 440s because that setup fouled the 7's. Although I'm changeing back to the 380s for emissions. Not sure on gaps as I don't have a feeler set. Something I'll be getting in the very near future

Still couldn't sort out the ignition miss on higher boost, so pulled my coils out for a closer inspection, all 6 are cracked after all

Rather than spend $900 on replacement Toyota coils, I am thinking of going to externally mounted bosch coils or similar. Does anybody have a setup like this that can provide some advice on which model coils etc?

Here are a couple of pics. I didn't look very carefully for cracks the first time because the coils looked almost new compared to the other posted images of cracked coils, where the whole coil looked pretty crappy & you could see other signs of excessive heat.

Look like mine. I just glued them up with plumbers glue and taped em. I didn't have spark issues before though. Give it a go first as it is cheap

Microtech users use Bosch HEC715's IIRC. Ask 1jz747 or someone on microtech forum.

Interesting. VVTi 1J only uses 3 coils. They sit on top of 1 3 and 5 sparkplugs with leads coming out of them that attach to the other 3

Maybe a wasted spark system? My 1MZ camry motor has a similar setup, coils only on the front bank of cylinders with leads to the rear

I'd say it'd have to be. Cant see single coils having built in sequential abilty for the 2 outputs
