I am also going to run about 20psi plus nitrous.

BTW if your coils are in good nic and you are using the x6 igniter I would think that is a pretty strong ignition system already. The next step is to upgrade to bosch coils and leads. I was only going to do that if it was really needed though. Shane picked up 40hp from this upgrade. He uses BCPR6's from memory though. (used)

I run NGK BKR7E11 (1.1mm gap) and have not had a stumble even up to 35psi (with the factory coils ).
I have also had the same set of plugs for probably 5000km now with pump and C16 fuel, but I have a decent ignition system (Autronic CDI).

    standard is the BKR6E's.

gapped to .8mm, but since they're getting older now, .7 is reccomended.

from there on, adjust gap and heat range accordingly.

apparently not, according to the Toyota OEM listing for suitable Denso plugs.

6speed: excuse my ignorance, but you are talking about a 1JZ with factory coils running the big gaps & 35psi? That's impressive! Makes you wonder then why 0.7 gap seems to be recommended by some.

I've just switched back to my platinum 6 heat range plugs gapped to 0.8, midrange has picked up plenty, but now I have a breakdown momentarily as it hits full boost (only 16psi) at approx 4000rpm, which then comes good and revs cleanly to redline

Nah mate, its a 2J, however they have the same coils as 1J.
The reason why I can get away with such large gaps is the Autronic CDI that puts out over 500 volts to the coil packs. I have it set up waste spark and the facory coils are still keeping up fine.

Anyone have any experience with the HKS DLI? Apparently it uses factory igniter and acts as a CDI when need be. Much cheaper than motec or autronic CDIs as well

jampac uses one in conjunction with new toyota coils. Don't know if he had issues that warranted them or just a case of over doing it.

I was thinking the same thing. Does the DLI actualy make a noticeable difference? Obviously not to power (kw) or anything, but to the spark?

I have a mate that works for bosch so I can get some bosch gear for a good price but I kinda like the look of the stock stuff. Yeah lame I know, but its just so much neater then 99% of the bosch set ups I've seen...

DLI makes a huge difference if you intend on running massive boost. One thing to note is if you get a DLI, it is best if you buy completely new coilpacks as I found with my ones, they were old (I think 15 year old originals) and one of them cracked open like a can of beans, in the middle of peak hour traffic and took out my ignitor as well.

So I've been running for about 10 months now with HKS DLI, brand new coilpacks, brand new coilpack connectors, brand new cam angle sensor connectors and brand new ignitor and have not had one single problem. I run a lot boost, have seen up to 27psi with no blow out what so ever. I use NGK BCPR7E (sometimes BKR7E) plugs gapped to 0.8mm.

I have to do the same as jampac, I know my old coils are going to die in the ass and most of the clips/connectors are just gone. but I don't know if I want to go for Toyota coils and leads/connectors or an after market set considering the condition of the present lot.

Thanks for the advice guys. My coilpacks and connectors are still looking pretty good (after all, theyre only 7 years old ) so the DLI might be the go. The engine runs pretty sweet at 20psi when the plugs are 100% but last time it was tuned the guy took out my BKR7E plugs and chucked in some sixes (the BKR7s got fouled up after the ecu was rewired and it was running pig rich). The BKR6 he used werent re-gapped and at a 1.1 gap it had a few issues up top. If I want to run more boost (which is possible) then I think adding some energy to the spark couldnt hurt

cant comment on anyone else, but it helped mine, mine used to miss at anything over 1.1BAR (on factory ceramics FTW!)

i regapped down to 0.7 from 0.8 and the miss dcleared up, and i got 1.3BAR out of it before i felt bad for the motor and connected the wastegates back up.

Well got dynoed with the BCPR7es's at .7mm gap. Only run 15psi and 16psi with nitrous no spark issues whatsoever. This is with x6 igniter and PVC'ed up 4 of the coils Oh and midrange was freaking awesome!

    We demand dyno graphage

I'm just about to go pull my plugs, so it'll be interesting to see the condition of both plugs and coils in a few minutes. The Dli arrived so i figured I'd get started.
