    Default help with engine mount?

I'm trying to find a rectangular engine mount.

Length isn't too much of a problem, but no more than 80mm
Width is where the issue will be. 50mm is kind of the max unless the loading downwards off the mount can be offset without too much problem.

It's on the engine end of a FWD engine.

Mounting on the car side is on the bottom via a horizontal bolt along the longer dimension which I was aiming to do via a piece of bent plate with crush tube.
The top will simply have a piece of bent plate going to the engine bracket.

A round mount won't work because of the space limitation without drilling another hole in the car (extremely difficult)

Should be able to find a catalogue on the web of all different styles and measurement. Try searching mackay rubbers.

If you have one of those "Pick A Part" type wreckers nearby I suggest you visit and go for a walk and look, Either that or buy a length of urethane and spin one up on a lathe to suit

?? is there a trick to it? i found the tool deflected the material until it was taking a huge chunk and then it just spun on the mandrel

current mount (ignore the engine underneath as looks like this is from some other conversion)

My computer at home is busted so this is the best I can do. It's a simple diagram & there will be gussetting, etc

The existing mount has a horizontal bolt through it
the new engine is 30mm longer than the old one, so a round mount doesn't physically fit.
The aim is to get a rectangular mount mounted vertically above the bolt.
I'll get a bracket made up so that the bolt goes through it.
then the top is easy as most mounts already have a bolts sticking out of the them, so it's simple to just drill a hole through the plate.

Its like turning/machining copper, you need to spend a while grinding the right tool profile and get the speeds spot on.

ah cool. HSS ground razor sharp would have probably been a better bet than the carbide inserts i was using now i think about it.

You can buy square plastic (hard/soft whatever works), should be able to get a tight enough fit in some square section with a welded plate. We use Cammthane at work but have had dealings with McNeal plastics. You'll probably have to swing past a shop and ask for an offcut, the shit is expensive if you even look like a paying customer.

Can't scale down existing design? Or just run around pick a part looking for a smaller one?

First time I tried I put a heap of pressure on the tool, it finally grabbed and dug straight in. Ended up twisting the bit of copper round before the motor stalled
Razor sharp HHS and use either milk or butter as a lubricant/coolant.

Favorite material was by far delrin

Is the square plastic then able to be bonded to the welded plate?

The top part isn't the problem, it's getting the bottom of the mount to then have a part of it which can then have a horizontal bolt through it.
And the bent plate (in red) which will then be gusseted isn't a problem either.

Had a good look around the wreckers. I had originally thought of a early 90s Charade mount which is smaller, but still required the hole in the mount to be re-drilled further away from the engine. This is pretty much impossible to do with the radiator support still in the car. And the rubber is in the wrong orientation. That might be ok for a carby SOHC 1.3L, but it's now got to handle an EFI DOHC 2.0L driven over rough surfaces.

The other possibility is to use an AE92 mount, which is turned 90 degrees. Therefore, the round part is along the car instead of across it. But this means cutting the existing mount off the car completely and manufacturing another complete bracket and then securing it to the chassis.

I did part up a Pathfinder mount which may work with a lot of trimming of the metal plates. But it will then need to be welded to the plate underneath as I need to cut off all of the bolt mountings to make it fit. Need to check with my welder guy to see if this can be done without effecting the rubber.
