Clutch and flywheel tips,advice needed!Pics

Ok, i'm about to refit my (used) clutch disc onto my 3sgte. I havn't done this before,so i'm after some advice..The disc looks to have plenty of meat left on it,so i dont see why i shouldnt reuse it. here's a pic btw.





1.I understand that the disc has to be perfectly clean/dry. what can i use to clean up this?prepsol (wax n grease remover),brake cleaner?

2. Also i was told if i'm using a used disc and my flywheel seems in good nick (no blue burn marks) it should be fine. give it a bit of a rough up with sandpaper.i used 320grit wet and dry on it, is this ok? it feels very smooth, is that good/bad for gripping?
And cleaning the flywheel surface, brake cleaner? prepsol?





3. And finally, i dont have an alligning tool.Is it ok to use a broom handle/stick? or any other good ways? Engine in question is a 3sgte with a fwd s53 g/box if that makes any difference

Sometimes using the input shaft spline from the gearbox can work as an aligning tool - even if it is a bit of a pain to move the gearbox around into place.

As far as clutch prep and flyhweel cleaning goes you could probably use acetone if you got it handy - brake cleaner would also work (seeing as they are both made for the same purpose, using similar materials i think).

It might pay to check if your flywheel is warped as well.

trick for aligning clutches is...

where the pressure plate has raised edges and you can see the friction plate, use your fingers in there to align it to the pressure plate surface before doing bolts up tight..

you'll kick yourself for how easy it is.. no need for clutch aligning tool at all (unless you have a pressure plate that contacts the flywheel all the way around..)

Thanks rwdboy do you think that 320grit on the flywheel is ok?should i use a coarser sandpaper?would sanding the clutch material slightly,help at all?

edit : and in the 2nd pic of the clutch, the side showing has to face the gearbox/throwout bearing correct?

yeah you are correct with regards to the second pic. it should say on teh clutch plate which side is which anyways.

i wouldnt really put anything on the clutch plate to clean it, but if you want to then brake clean should be the only thing to use as it leaves no residue.

DO NOT sand the clutch plate, it will cause shudder through the pedal. and you shouldnt need to sand the flywheel anymore. just fit it all up. make sure the pressure plate bolts are tight!

not really... you are lining it up against the pressre plates driving surface.. not the flywheel... since if the friction/driven plate is aligned to the pressure plates driving/friction surface, it should also be aligned to the flywheel and the spigot..

if not it's farked anyway


as for sanding friction plate, i always have... gives a slightly rougher surface for bedding in.. heck i once even used an angle grinder to put marks in the flywheel for extra bits (and worked)

shudder is grip n slip, due to either oily/dirty friction plate or flywheel or similar...

for flywheel i often hand grind with 80 or 120 grit emery paper, whatever is lying around a machined surface is not a snooth finish (flat, but not smooth) to aid the
bedding process and give a bit more bite..

Thanks for the tips everyone. im trying to allign the clutch now.i'm using the handle end of a screwdriver in the spline of the disc. i've positioned the pressure plate in the locating dowels, but i can get it so sit flush i havnt put any bolts in yet..

Yep, as others said it looks good. For clutch plates to see if they can be reused measure the depth of friction material to the highest rivet, the spec varies.

I'd take oldcorolla's advice, esp on going courser on the flywheel.

The pressure plate will pull flush (it is under preload, is how it works) when you put the bolts in. I generally walk them around in a circle, but I believe the proper technique is to go in a star pattern. Also check the torque setting for them, the torque setting for M series pressure plate bolts is tiny, and they are a pita to get out

can you get your fingers into the sides of the pressure plate??

then you slide the gbox on and wiggle it around until the clutch plate is lined up with the
spigot bearing.

then....gently slide the gbox off and tighten the PP bolts up, seeing as its all lined up.

then mate them together for the final time and your set.

thats how ive done it a couple times without a clutch aligning tool

Generally best to do a star type of pattern - makes for more accurate torque readings too i think.

Me = too lazy to lift gearboxes for shits and giggles.

I've done 3/4 by eye and not had a prob...

i've seen a broom handle piece used to line up the clutch when you don't have the specific tool. That might help
