    Default I question about Mags....

I have a 72 TA22 and I recently bought some Jellybean mags off ebay ($320) and I want to throw them on my car. I looked in the wheel well and the mags that are on there come fairly close to the struts at the moment.
The current mags are 14x6 with a fairly low offset (i don't know if thats the right word, but most of the mag hangs under the car). The tyres on there are 195/65/14 (skypower or some other low grip tyre). This leaves about 2cm of clearance between the rubber and the strut
The ones I want to throw on are 14x7 with a fairly deep dish to them. I'm thinkin about throwing 235/60/14 Bridgestone Eagers.

Will i be able to put these mags on with the eagers?

Also I've been reading these (and the old forums) about 2T/3T hybred engines, but can't figure out what exactly they are. Is it a 2T block with 3T head/crank/pistons etc so to avoid having to engineer the car (same engine number)?

you want to fit 235's to a ta22?

    why?

a 2t/3t is a 2t, with the crank, rods and pistons of a 3t, the pistons have to have little cuts made into the top of them so they clear the valves, it increses the capacity to 1.8 litres.

if ur chucking on 235's i wouldnt do it on your fronts. only the rears.. 7" wide rims im pretty sure are rated at 215/225/235 .. it would make sense on the rears.. but fronts would be pushing it. go 225's on there.

btw eldar those volks should have 235's all around im pretty sure..

I never thought about how hard it would be to steer.... Looks like I'll go for the 225's. I want to go for the Eagers because they have the white raised letting on the side (bit stupid i know, but i want to keep the 'old school' appeal).

I'm new to this whole 'having a car worth upgrading' thing. Last car was a shopping trolly VL.... So the 2T/3T uses the 2TG head? I thought that quad valve would be the way to go....

Chris, i know the volks have 235's all round.

that said though, my car is powered by a 3.0 litre turbo engine, weighs twice as much, and has power steering.

205's would be the max for me, even thats pushing it.

205's are a bit small for a 7" rim. id be starting at 215 on ur 7" fronts and leaving 235's on ur 8" rears.. thats my 0.02 anyway

205's are plenty with the 850 or so kilo TA22... The 2TG head is a masterpiece not to be underestimated, and if you were to get the quad valve head, you would be looking at a 3TGTE head, in which case to fully utilise it you would need the turbo and would have to engineer it anyway, so why not go the whole hog.

As for fitting on the rims, jack ya car up, and test fit a rim!! Thought that would be the first thing to do. Then see how much room you have to play with for tyres. If they are a fairly deep dish rim, you should be fine.

Another thought is if the tyre gets too close to the strut, buy a proper wheel spacer to give a little bit more clearance? Not the prefered method but . . . .

What Offset are your current rims and new rims?

If your rims are too close to your strut then rims that have more negative offset will be FURTHER away from the strut but closer to your wheelarch/guards. (if both rims are the same width that is)

If a wheels offset is 0 the bolt hub will be dead centre of the rim. IE 6" rim. will have 3" dish(depth) on both sides (theoretically, that is not counting the width of the bolthub).

This is where Offset comes in:

-- Postive; means the BOLT HUB will be further towards the guardside of the rim(outside) meaning the rims will actually sit more 'IN' and towards your strut.

-- Negative; means the bolt hub will be further towards the brakeside of the rim(inside) meaning the rims will stick 'OUT' towards your wheel arch/guards and away from your strut.

So if you had a 6" +20mm rim and a 10" +20mm rim youd be in trouble because the 10" would be more than touching your strut. You could fit a 10" rim but youd need something like -40mm Offset to have it even turn and youd need to drive around with "slightly" flared guards (lol)

But if you get the rims and they ARE too close to your strut. Dont fret, just go out and buy some 25mm BOLTON spacers. Which should do for jellybeans (but ofcourse you can get bigger spacers if you want them to sit even further out). Keep in mind however that spacers are illegal. But that dont stop a whole lot of people.

I have 14x7 rims on my RA23 Celica with 205/60 tyres. They only just fit on the front, but a TA22 has noticeably smaller guards so you're going to have real problems getting a larger tyre in there without modifications to the bodywork.

IMO 195's are plenty big enough for the front of a TA22 and should fit OK.

regarding how hard it will be to steer - i *had* 225s all round on my RA23 (yeah i don't think the front was quite legal) and never had any steering issues. it felt fine.

the comment earlier about wanting the white lettering coz it looks cool - that ain't stupid, the fact that we like the oldschool look is why we play around with these cars in the first place. otherwise noone would drive a crappy old TA22

hopefully within a year ill be running 225/50/15 at the front and 265/50/15 on the rear. with some gentle persuasion of the guards of course. i know the steering (even unassisted) wont be a problem, and actually, i kinda like it. parking it is a little bit of a workout that i would normally miss out on sitting on my arse in front of the computer.

You shure about 980 kgs?? that sounds a lot. Handbook figure on a RA23 is 1008kg with 18RG, and the TA22 is a fair bit shorter, with a MUCH lighter motor, smaller brakes and suspension, 15kg less on the box etc. So... 850, maybe 900 is my guess.

Hey just on fitting 225's/235's on the back of a ta22, i used to run 14 X 7's with 215's Ducaro GA's on the rear of my ta22, and as soon as i put the low king springs and monroe gt shocks, the outer sidewall was getting ripped up from the rear wheel well. And im not to sure they will even fit on the front might have the same problem, Just go 195's front and rear...
