That's what I meant also. The pair of wires between the VR and the ignition module. I am yet to see an EM shielded one (though it wouldn't be a bad idea, I think the one in the MS2 loom is coax)

The ignitor to dizzy wires are about 5cm from the coil HT lead currently. Is that far enough?

Further the better... Remember you have 36,000V giving off radio frequency noise, which just happens to be at the same frequency that your VR and ignitor are running at.

Update on my 18RGU poor-running situtation.

I fitted new BPR5EY-11 plugs and it ran better but still not great. So I replaced the old coil and ballast resistor with the non-ballasted one from the donor car. Suddenly it all came good. Set the timing to 12 deg BTDC and it idled beautifully and didn't backfire when revved. Now it flies.

    Thanks for your help guys!

good to hear she has worked out.

Hopefully should get my 18R-GUE back from the machinist this week, they ended up machining out the ringlands to take stock 18R rings.

The bore is sorect, but 2AZ rings are 1.2mm top, 1.2mm 2nd, 2.0 Oil ring.

Dyna truck engines, J, 2J use 2.5, 2.5, 4.0mm rings. This is an 88.0 bore, but if you got .020" oversize, they'd be 88.5 bore, or .040" OS would be 00.5mm OS for 18RG pistons.
The thicknesses are not correct for all rings from 18Rg pistons, from memory, the 88232 pistons (9.7:1) take 2.0mm, 2.5mm, 4.0mm rings.
    Don't quote me on that.

    H diesel ringsd are also 2.5, 2.5, 4.0 in an 88.0mm bore.

I'll confirm the ring thicknesses required tomorrow. Pretty sure they are 1.5 2.5 4.0 (though 1.5 does sound a bit thin) whereas the 18R-C are 2.5 3.5 4.0

    9.7:1 88232 STD bore = 2.0, 2.5, 4.0mm
    8.3:1 88270 STD bore = 1.5, 1.5, 4.0mm

I've found this site quite usefull recently when designing custom pistons.
    www.hastingsmfg.com

hastings rings are commonly available in Australia and they have good product catalogues.

Some alternative options for 18RGEU pistons might include:
(STD bore 87.5, so 0.040" OS required)

    2M4206 - moly (4cyl)

    2C4222 - chrome (4cyl)
    2M4222 - moly (4cyl)
    4222 - plain (4cyl)

    2M4880 - moly (4cyl)

    5652
    2C5652 - chrome (4cyl)
    2M5652 - moly (4cyl)

You'd have to search through their ring finder master to find which engines the above part numbers belong to.
You'd also want to email [email protected] to get the axial and radial ring widths as well as the back clearances for the ring sets.

Alternatively, you might be able to give the dimensions of the standard rings and see what the've got.

This link is useful when deciding which ring set is the right one. It's in the tech tips section.

I thought I had it sorted but it seems not. As i dont drive it much and now summer is comming it will come out of the shed more often. The 18rgue carb retrofit starts well, idles well revs well to easily 7000 under no load. Drive down the road and it starts to missfire and wont rev past 5000. Has the electronic dizzy, NGK leads. The tacho bounces from 5000 and above to zero and back, this makes me think its electrical related probably a dizzy problem. Other than this it runs like a japanese clock.
thoughts from anyone would be appreciated.

Yep will do some more fault finding tomorrow, I will treat it to some new plugs, my thoughts are either the coil or the dizzy is not up to the task. I have a spare coil so I will change that out and if no joy I may change out the dizzy. I only have a cheap electric fuel pump fitted and am also concerned about the amount of fuel it can deliver. Maybe a high volume low pressure job is the way to go
    Thanks
