Ok people. After a long fight with my car before I realsied I didn't hook up the neutral switch and then my fuel pump not sucking fuel. I finally have cranking and fuel. But now I have no spark coming from my coil. Can someone quickly verify what wires I need hooked to the coil/election ignition setup please.

I know that this is pointless & gonna shit ya, so sorry, but anyhoo; I recently bought 2 18RG's for 400 bucks. #1 is complete & a runner with 40 mm Dellorto carbs & Pacemaker extractors, new clutch & Celica 5 speed box. #2 is in a thousand pieces, but all there with 9.7 pistons standard exhaust manifold & 40 mm Mikuni solex carbs + air box & another 5 speed celica gear box.

Depends on what kind of elec ign you're running.

    A normal early toyota jobbie (so, RA60 21R, RN85 22R-C, 18RGEU) only needs:
    -Power under run/crank (on/start)
-Ground - the body of the igniter needs to be grounded (no wire)
-Inductive sensor signal - from the distributor

That's all it needs to fire IIRC

It has all that. The igniter is putting the power out for my fuel pump, maybe my coil is shagged.

Your igniter powers what now? How have you got that wired up??

Get a test lamp across the coil terminals and see if it flashes under cranking. Do a little testing before throwing parts at it.

My igniter has an output from the coil in the wiring loom.

Can you put up some pics and/or a wiring diagram of how your car is currently wired?

I'm not sure how but I'm pretty sure I've hooked the coil up wrong I just read the wiring diagram again and swapped the wires over. Just waiting for my battery to charge again.

    Ok, me again...

I'm learning all this as I go, and I didn't realise I had a misfire at idle until a few people pointed it out.

When I pull the lead off Cyl #1 and Cyl #4, it makes no difference to my idle speed

I replaced my distributor cap, rotor, leads, and plugs. I swapped leads and plugs around to double check. The problem stays with Cyl #1 and #4.

I double checked the electronic ignition was in phase by cutting a hole in an old cap (as per the XR700 instructions) then shining a timing light in there. All good.

Cam timing is set with the crank at top-dead center and the lobes on Cyl #1 facing outwards ( <o o> ) making sure the camshaft slit is facing straight up.

Playing with the mixture settings on Cyl #4 makes a difference to idle speed, but Cyl #1 makes no difference.

I'm yet to swap the carbs between Cylinders to see if the problem goes to Cyl #2 and #3. I'll try that and report back tomorrow.

Does anyone have any other ideas why I have a misfire?
