    Hi,

in regards to the 18rg/rc that ella bought. I'd looked at buying that car from where it had been previously advertised before *** bought it. It had the claim of engine rebuild, then shoved in the back yard to rot away. There are many people that have no idea that the bottom end is fairly different between the single and twin cam engines and there is evidence of this nearly weekly on this thread alone! It probably should have run, just would've had really low compression. I'm actually fairly sure that *** had it running at his house, though not 100% sure.

    Just sayin

i have no need to name names, however if you read back a little in this thread its pretty obvious.

ok so my original question still stands, are these bits able to suffice in my engine or will they be no good?

if needs be i'll put new rods and pistons in, but id prefer to just leave it if i can get away with it.

No it wont be driven nicely all the time, but wont have the sh!t thrashed out of it all the time. so i need to know if the R-C bottom end will take a little punishing...

    Hi,

just get rg pistons and you'll be fine. The rc/rg rods are apparently different but there'd be that many twin cam engine with 18rc rods running around it's not funny. Aaaaaaaaaaaaand i think it is only on the later 18rg rods you can pics the difference, but don't quote me on that. The crank is the same.

Not quite true i used 18rc pistons before in my last 18rgte engine without valve relief worked fine until i broke a timing chain.

    Hi,

interesting! Though, forced induction does tend to change how low comp engines behave. Still, interested though in seeing what was hidden in that block!

Personally I would be returning said motor for refund/replacement with motor of correct specs. Regardless of what the seller was told by the people they bought it off, they are still responsible for ensuring that what they advertise is what they provide.

    Hi

    details from said ad

"Its a 18rgu, ( will get head number later ) it has had a rebuild but not run in, cannot give paperwork as i do not have it But it has extreme compression ( can test for you if you'd like ) i believe it has 9:7:1 pistons in it. Running standard Solex 40's. Has what looks to be 2'' extractors, comes with radiator aswell

I am also under the impression it has a new clutch and that the gearbox was reconditioned, i cannot confirm this as i have not pulled the motor out yet, and or separated motor and gearbox."

24hrs later (sunday) Gordon has now got back to me - he has accidently sent wrong part - ra60 instead of ra23/28, has apologised profusely, and is going to send down the correct part, and even offered to pay for my postage to post the incorrect part back up.

now happy again, pending receipt of correct part.

so all it took was a phone call...

Street: RA23 with 18RG (off the road being rebuilt, rust cut out, etc, usual story)
Track/Rally: TA23 with 18RG Cams Logbooked (my baby)

The amazing thing about common sense is it's not that common...

I second that, a full refund and a case of your choice for your troubles. Here, here River, The members of this club and forum should always back up 'WHAT" they sell.

Absolutely. For some people, honesty has taken a back seat.

If it's who I think who sold you that engine, then I must admit to not being very surprised.

Ok firstly i dont have a digital camera to take any pictures.

as for the chance of a refund, highly unlikely. they went straight off with my money and bought another car with it. several times in that thread they were whinging about not being a business he even stressed about having less than three dollars.

id rather have a engine i can sort of use (albeit once i have swapped a few things) and not have to deal with the BS of trying to get a refund (blood from a stone).

this has left a very sour taste in my missus' mouth however, no longer will any 18R-G be going anywhere near her baby, instead i have another idea as to what to do with it...

    Hi,

Unless you really know the history of an engine, getting a second hand unit is risky in that you don't know what it is like inside.

For me, I get them fully rebuilt so I know I've got a fresh engine. It is best to take the hit of money once and get the engine overhauled/rebuilt before putting it in the car. Nothing shits me more than having to spend more time, money and effort to pull the engine out and do it again.

Although you have an RC block, it is strong enough and fine for RG use. The crank is fine and so to would be the rods (unless new ones are required for higher comp pistons). I'd be looking at getting new pistons with higher compression (9.7) and replace the bearings. If the rest of the engine looks fine then you should be okay to use it. When I say "fine" I mean it will work as is, but as I am a pedant, I'd get the crank checked for balance and also scrutinise the rods, hone the bores, etc.

Has the dipstick been relocated to the exhaust side, and the RC dipstick position been blanked off?

Maybe take Ben up on his suggestion as two sets of eyes can find more things that need attention or decide some items need not be replaced.

Finally, I tend to think the engine being descibed as an 18R-G was more out of ignorance rather than being dishonest. Having seen various posts from the seller, I question their knowledge more than I question their honesty.

In any event, you have not got what was advertised and maybe you're right in that you can't get a refund or a replacement "true" 18R-G. Fixing this engine to proper RG specs may be your only alternative and, once done, it should be fine for some serious fun.

To Ella, a fellow Toymodder in need after an unfair deal,
Once you have worked out what you need to get the motor back to spec, post up a list of bits and between us we can help out. I know I have plenty of spare standard RG pistons, rods etc that I will never use that you are welcome too.

River is right, any motor bought should be stripped down and freshened so you know what you have got and how far you can go without worrying about every little noise.

Lets see your list and we will see what we can do. Howboutitboys!!!
