willofan, I have been thinking about making(mose-so getting my engineer mates to make) something like this for my 18rg, however mine is running very nicely at the moment so I don't want to take it apart to take measurements. If anyone has a buggered slipper I can get access to? - or if someone can give me some accurate measurements of the top timing chain system - i'm very keen to make the thing.

    Willofan,

That picture is from Tom's (USA) 2TG Corolla isn't it? He put an HKS (from memory) gear drive kit in.

It is basically the same as the kameari 2TG set one.

Correct spec (DIN 8196 type 06B) ball bearing idler gears are available, all you'd have to do is make a mount for it. (I forgot where they are available from too).

Can anyone tell me if it' true that the old M-series engine used a gear-on-arm tensioner instead of a slipper?

Ok so having gotten my engine home and onto the engine stand for closer inspection it seems i have a G head on a 18R-C block. ill do some more investigating but ill be unhappy if i find it full of 18R-C internals...

at least its clean and in good nick.

Edit: i just read that post back to myself and i sound like a disgruntled buyer lol.
for all intents and purposes i should have taken the time to work out what it was before sale.

I must say andrew (scoobzd) and gordon (toyboyracer) was easy to deal with, even letting me come and pull the motor out myself when it suited me. +1 for them, would buy from them again...

Ok well i have now found out for sure that my engine is in fact a 18R-C with a twin cam head setup bolted on.

It is not a 18RG as was advertised, It DEFINATELY hasnt been recently (read: never) rebuilt as advertised, it didn't come with a heavy duty clutch as advertised and the box has seen far better days, not recently recoed as advertised...

Feeling a little ripped off? yes i am.

anyways. i guess it remains to ask, how long is this motor going to last with said bottom end? is it best to pull it out and rebuild it now? or just go through all the pain of a conversion and have it blow up on me, or possibly last for ages...

    Hi,

what makes you 100% regarding it being an rc vs rg. The ONLY conclusive thing is the rg engine number is out by 180 deg to an rc one.

How do you know it hasn't been rebuilt? Have ou stripped the engine down?

Do you know where the engine number is? It's just behind the dissy.

If it starts with the number 18R 95xxxxx it's a twin cam block.

Thanks for the faith in me guys. Yes the motor is currently stripped down in my shed. The pistons are definatly 18rc pistons as per photos comparing the two in this.thread and the rods again are 18rc items again going on pictures from earlier pages here.

yeah i bought an 18RC years ago that was "recently rebuilt and ran like a dream". When i got it home to look at, it had no compression, and bits of piston skirts in the sump. More like ran like a nightmare, in fact, it didn't run at all. Only paid $100 and bought it to rebuild anyway, so wasn't that great a loss. Plus it came with a free brand new radiator!

on a side note i got 2 parts on Tuesday from those 2 who Ella bought from, and both parts were exactly as advertised, and arrived on time (Qld to SA), so my experience was good.

correction, 1 part is not correct!! i am not happy at all either, have made a call to get it sorted, yet to get an answer (this is on a ssaturday)

24hrs later (sunday) Gordon has now got back to me - he has accidently sent wrong part - ra60 instead of ra23/28, has apologised profusely, and is going to send down the correct part, and even offered to pay for my postage to post the incorrect part back up.

now happy again, pending receipt of correct part.

so all it took was a phone call...

but yes, i wouldn't be happy either Ella

    my 2 cents

Street: RA23 with 18RG (off the road being rebuilt, rust cut out, etc, usual story)
Track/Rally: TA23 with 18RG Cams Logbooked (my baby)

The amazing thing about common sense is it's not that common...
