I'm only guessing, but the HKS/ART pistons are probably cast, not forged, which could be why people are saying they're weak. I don't necessarily agree for N/A, in fact good cast pistons are probably even a good idea.

Presidentom, I would like to see photos of this motor. All 18R-G's had Yamaha heads, though some did not have the Yamaha logo cast into them. Basically the head is a revision of the 3M-G head used in the 2000GT which was 3 XS650 Yamaha heads pasted together (well not literally, but you know what I mean).

Revving to 10,000rpm isn't impossible, but would take a LOT of work to get it there, and an idle of 2000rpm would also be something an engine like that would do (stock they idle around 950rpm anyway). But twisting the shell?? Unless it has some heavy boost going through it, I would say he is pulling his dick too much. As Norbie said, it wouldn't make the torque (boosted is a different story). Oh, and remember the Celicas didn't have an identifiable chassis, they had a unibody construction with a subframe that is only joined at the front. Not the strongest of constructions by any standard, but certainly can hold up to an N/A 2Ltr engine's torque. I think plywood would handle it though... balsa would be a worry...

So yeah, get some pics, get him to run it, and go from there. This engine if it is anything close to what he claims, would be a not legal for street, race only engine, and $2k if it isn't flogged out would be a cheap way of getting a race engine (as long as you can afford the rest of the cost of owning a race car)
    Cheers, Owen

Oh, and the steel case box is more likely just a W50.

Hi team, considering most people in this thread will have tossed their 18R-C's for 18R-G's, anyone in Sa got a spare running R-C around?

On topic, my pistons for my R-G haven't arrived yet

    Javal,
I have a spare 18R-C lying around, with a w50 attached to it.
I think I still have the extractors too. I can't exactly rememeber, but I think they were pacemakers.

This engine wasn't without problems but the top end timing gear and headgasket were replaced 6 months before it came off the road. The pistons are ACL 1mm oversize and the carby was it very good working order. In my ra23, it would draw level and or beat my brothers 18RG (9.7:1) RA28 to 60kph every time.

I didn't look at the bottom end much and did not check the bearings. The valves were all re-lapped and were tip-top just before it came out.

PM me if you want more information.

Went and saw that engine on the weekend: it's actually a 2T-GEU that's been converted to run 2x Webbers. It has a yamaha casting on the front, but I didn't look for the engine number, and since I've been told that the ones with blank numbers are special prepped by Toyota.
Anyways, I know it's not the 18R's that this forum is designed for, but does anyone have any opinion on these? And if I could run it in my RA28? I believe it's an older engine, and thought there might be a few problems due to emissions etc anyways.
He wants 2k, comes with a spare head, accessories and an Aluminium case gearbox.

    Hi,

unless i saw it running in a car and could drive it i wouldn't pay any more than about 800 for the package. Who knows how or even if it runs.......... Engine is from the same era and was found in the ta22/ta27 gt's. Honestly, just go for an 18rg. Don't forget the 2t is a 1.6l too.

    Hi,

sad but true i think you meant to write. I think the only way i could justify buying an ra40 is so i could put my 18rg into something. Sick of waiting for a cheap ra23 to pop up

    Hi,

Is it the first series RA40 that has the round headlights, and the 2nd series that has the square ones?

Anyway, for me... the 1st series, be it coupe or l/back are unpleasant to my eyes, no matter how tough they are made to look. The 2nd series - again - for me - can look partially semi-pleasant in the l/back, if well presented.

Actually, thinking about it, I don't think there has ever been a Celica coupe after the RA35 that looked any good to my eyes.
