    a) You should check your big end bearings, they are a more likely culprit than the gudgeon pin bushes (small end bearings).

    b) where did you get the water pump housing from??

I have an 18RGEU in my 28 with pace maker extractors, Which was fine until it started being driven as a daily.
I am finding that every time its due for an oil change, i am also needing to replace the heater hoses and half the wiring on the LHS of the engine bay due to excessive temperatures.
Has anyone here tried insulating the 18RG extractors and had success? If so what did you use, ceramic coating or the after market heat resistant tape?
I was thinking about just fabricating some heat shields...

We've been running extractors too, but haven't ever had to replace wiring or heater hoses.

What design are your extractors? Picture?

For sheet aluminium, try Smart Aluminium or Capral Aluminium in Wingfield.
They might have stores in other locations if that's not close enough to you.

I've done well through those companies before.

I have extractors on my GEU, hurricane I think. I use the tape you can buy at repco, also spayed them for sealing or something. Have not had a problem. When you first put the tape/spay on it will smoke for a while though from the heat .

Get some stucko (really thin textured aluminium sheeting) and create a shield with that. Use anything you want to mount it... it is super lightweight. Just pay thought to where the airflow goes in your bay too... make sure you are not using the shield to direct hot air at anything.

another good source of heat sheild is a street sign (shhh). Make a dummy out of card board. have it mount to a couple of manifold bolts an a tab on the bottom to be hose clamped to one of the exhaust pipes. made one up like this for my xf which used to melt the accel cable all the time

    Cheers for the input people.
I have no problems fabricating a shield, i just don't really want to do it.
Don't think it will look too good?
I think the engine mount is perishing prematurely as well, So it would require a full shield.
So i'm thinking about using the tape... Just haven't heard much good about it.
Omegaman; any idea how much the tape reduced heat?
Powder coating is expensive, but if it is the only thing that will work efficiently, then i may have to spend the cash.

How will powdercoating help?? Or do you mean HPC coating?? (Ceramic coating it is also known as). The tape will work better than ceramic, but I would do both, as the ceramic coating will prevent premature corrosion caused by the tape.

o man ra23; in regards to air flow, i hadn't thought about that.
i have run extractors in several cars and not found heat to be such a problem.. i don't know why the 18rg extractors seem so much hotter. In regards to extractor heat, is it more extractor design or engine and set up?

Depends what your exhaust gas temperatures are. Dont forget too you have a bonnet vent sucking air through past your extractors up through the bonnet, instead of under the car, and this can be causing issues with your wiring. Then again, with Pacemaker Extractors and an 18R-G (early high compression lumpy cam model) I never had issues with either heater hoses or wiring in my RA23.

I was wondering is there is something wrong with the set up... i checked the temp a while ago, have forgotten the figures now, but it was stupidly high. Reckon i could cook on the LH strut tower.
I'm thinking i may take a photo and measure the temp again... will post it and see if anyone can see an obvious problem i may be missing.

Methinks your EGTs might be a bit high if it's melting stuff nearby. Ignition timing too retarded perhaps?

I have a set of pacemakers fitted to the Rg in my 28 and the heater hoses come no where near them and they are a mile away from anything that may melt.
    Cheers Dave
