8.3 is turbo safe territory... won't be anything impressive in NA form... that said... it really depends on what your used to... for an L plater, i say sure, it's all you need... learn to drive before you go racing mates in skylines, i scared my self silly even with an 18RC... mind you, there was a good dose of down hill involved...

They gained more power out of the 18RGUE with the better head and injection over the higher compression and better cams of the 18RGU... so you tell me how poo the lower compression is?? Of course, early cams and early pistons combined with injection and 270 head will yield decent results.

They didn't get that much more from the 18RGEU, only about 5 horsepowers wasn't it?
I'd attribute that to the EFI and cam timing as the valve sizes, springs and port design is pretty much the same between the 88253 and 88270 heads.
The cam timing it quite different between the 8.3 and 8.7 engines, and the EFI versions didn't have to run all that tagged on emmissions stuff.
The 18RGEU also had lighter rods, not sure how much difference that makes though.

5hp is still reasonable gains considering they dropped compression and emission levels... imagine if they didnt drop compression??

steve M... you mentoin they changed cam timing a fair amount, is it possible this was to assist higher combustion pressures? i.e. lower static compression but the difference is made up with timing?

    SillyCarS,

Its good to see someone else on here has a good understanding of how important injector flow patterns can be. Anything twin spray will cause wetting of the port walls causing all sorts of poor drivability issues - not to mention emissions concerns for anyone wanting to pass an emission test for engineering.

I've brought this up in the 18R-GTE reference manual thread too. It's a very valid point to make!

I would love to get hold of those TRD gear sets for the timing.

One would think if you have spent that much money on an engine you would have used it.

Hi guys, what brand/company would you suggest for forged pistons and other performance parts for an 18rgeu/18rgu? Any help/suggestionr/personal opinion
    is appreciated.
