So i finally found my cam timing tool. If there is any interest in having it drawn up and copied i'll go ahead and have it done. I sit next to an engineer at work who uses cad every day plus i've got access to plasma cutters. So it SHOULD be very cheap to make.

    Cheers
    Alex

Looking for a new toy. If you have something 18r powered let me know.

Shifty, the ECU I am using has one ignition output (configurable for more, however I would need then to use multiple external ignitors). So depends on what ignition module you use. If you use a dual channel ignition module, then you can run wasted spark and ditch the dizzy altogether, putting a blanking plate over the hole. If you run a single channel ignition module, then you will need the shell of the dizzy (with shafts, cap and rotor button only) to distribute to the correct piston. The latter is what I will be doing due to the ECU I have chosen.

Hm this is going to be quite the learning experience. One question I do have though - you said you're ditching the dizzy because it's unreliable due to wear etc... yet you then said you're using the shafts etc for triggering anyway... aren't you reintroducing the problem you're trying to avoid?

From what little I've picked up in the last day or so, the three options seem to be:

    * one single channel coil, triggered by 'distributor'
    * one dual channel coil, running waste spark
    * four individual coils

I prefer the latter two options, I think.

So anyway what does that tool do? I've been playing cars for years and never had anything that looked like that!

I'm not triggering from the dizzy. It is just distributing. I am triggering from a missing tooth wheel on the crank pulley. If you look at the dizzy cap to rotor button interface, there is quite a broad connection period, so the small amount of play in the system which is enough to throw the signal out of whack, isn't enough to make the rotor button interface an issue.

I am also interested in the Cam Tool, or alternatively the drawing.

Let me know if you are intending to knock up a batch.

I'll get the drawing done hopefully next week, if i'm not too busy. I'll have one made and passivated. If it turns out failry cheap i'll get some made but if not i'll just email people the dimensions.

Can anyone recommend some spark plugs?
I've only ever bought cheap ones for my cars in the past, are expensive plugs worth the extra cash? Am I going to notice much difference?

I use NGK BPR5EY-11 in mine. No need for expensive plugs for a stock (or even mildly modified) engine.

Thanks, I plan on upgrading to an eletronic dizzy shortly after the motor goes in, would this make a difference?

Nope, I have the electronic dizzy in mine, those plugs are the ones recommended by NGK. (www.ngk.com.au look under japanese imports)

    Your Vehicle:
    9/1978 - 6/1981 TOYOTA CELICA 2000 - 18R-GEU

    Spark Plug Part No.
Recommended Plug BPR5EY-11 (These are around $7 ea)
Iridium Option BPR5EIX-11 (These are around $25 ea)

The iridiums are meant to last longer (and for the price, hope you do get full life out of them!), but since the plugs are easy to change on 18RG's I don't bother. (since there would be bugger all difference to performance)

Ok, thanks heaps, +rep! So good spark plugs will only last longer? There's no performance gain? What about on a worked motor?
As I write this it strikes me that this might be a stupid question...
