indeed , i use welding earth cable, works well... and cheap as chips and its fancy orange or black![]()
2ga or 4ga earth straps from batt-->chassis and from chassis-->block FTW. big improvement in starting power over stock straps.

i'm 99% sure i've got the engine setup right and that now (with the dizzy and everything)
and..
go to start it have it in start while the running the timing gun.. and
it seems way about, about 2-4 cm's out..
timing gun also dosent want to work all the time!
i wonder if the spark signal isn't keeping up or something.
gahhh
hmm, last time I had that problem (timing light) the spring-clipped electrode thingy wasn't making proper contact against #1 lead and as such was found to be clipped upside-down thus preventing the signal from #1 lead to the timing light. I guess next move is to make sure your timing light electrode lead from #1 spark plug lead is sitting right when you get it going.
edit: also is the ECU in test/diagnosis-mode, ie. have you bridged the required terminals in the diagnosis port, if you have one?![]()

it's an aftermarket computer, dosen't have something like the toyota system
im starting to think i should just go back to OEM management with a SAFC.
or maybe, just get rid of the whole fkn piece of shit.
just had a thought about the timing being really out
perhaps this is just because it's while cranking?..
i.e. the car wont start so i can't check the timing at 800 rpm (which is meant to be 10deg)
so maybe at 250 rpm it's a fair bit more retarded(haha, my car is plenty retarded)
gah!
hrm
well
the ignition dosent want to keep sparking while it turns over
like it sparks and sparks, and then stops and wont spark, have to turn ignition off and stuff
oh well
time to buy a metal hammer and do a number on the engine/car i think.
Hm, ive just re-read the thread, and you say that you are using a 4AC coil?
If you are i think that this might be a source of igntion problems. Ive never heard of using a contact controlled coil to fire from an igniter.
If you have an electronic coil around then give that a go. if not then just get a HEC716 for $40 and try that, you shoudl get a much more reliable spark than the 4AC coil.

i was using the original 4age coil with it
but it seemed to be out of spec
but i can't find the manual for the bigport 4age, so i can't check if it's in spec.
i was thinking of using a GT40 or something.
but ah, $$.
sunk too much money into this conversion now.
no money till tomorrow too.
it just dosen't make any sense, it was running a month ago, and it wont run now.
p.s.
kingcrome kinggrips do major damage to sprinter windshields.
4age tech book. covers bigport mostly. however most things can be related to smallport.

yeah
the stuff in my engine bay is a bit different to that book though
i.e. my cam drive gear thingo for the dizzy, the indentations are different.
Might sounds silly, but looking at ure data, ure battery volts drops very low, u probably charge it when it gets too low, but maybe one of the cells has died!! try taking it somewhere and have them test the battery, (if ya cant do correct tests yourself). just an idea... this could be reason for orange spark, which is weak!!![]()
oh trust me, that's definantly not silly!!!! first thing i did.
i've tried three different batteries, and have even recharged all said batteries after first attempt, left them on a good over night 12 hour charge, they're fully good to go in the morning, and still no good! but, yeah, no one else had posted that one.
at the moment, it nearly starts on key turn, but then the coil seems to stop sparking, so, i'll be getting a bosch gt40 coil on monday most likely, and then i'll have another go at it.
