    Default My MX22. 1G-GTE Or 1JZ-GTE

I am looking at giving my Mx22 a transplant. At first, i wanted to go with a 1UZ but from what i have researched, it's not ezy and maybe not worth doing. So now I am thinking maybe a 1G-GTE or 1JZ-GTE. So I thought I would throw the idea out to all you guys think.
    My thoughts are......

What would be better value for money?

How difficult would the conversion be? Anyone done it? Any major hurdles?

Which would fit better (eg lining up engine and gearbox)?

It has to be manual (i know the 1JZ manual gearbox'es are hard to find and very expensive) so this make me think 1G-GTE.....

    Thanks guys

1JZ can use the same box as 1G.

My vote, 1JZ. Reason? Both are going to be expensive to put in, the difference in cost of 1G and 1JZ is nothing, its all wiring and mounting.

GT has got a 2JZ in a MX23, wait for his reply.

    Expensive??
What part of it are you thinking will be expensive?

so are you saying that the 1G manual box will bolt up to 1jz?

    thanks

1JZ and 1G can use the same gearbox, either W55, W56, W57 or W58, as long as you have the correct bellhousing.

However, you will probably be advised that a R154 will be much better for more than 250hp at the fly.

Im not going to get into how expensive engine swaps are.

seeing as how the 1jz has 280ish hp at the fly standard and some people have gotten away with using w58's they should be ok if treated nicely.

You need a 2jzge bellhousing to fit a w58 to a jz. You can use a 2jzge gearbox as well.

Recommended diff, Hilux 8" or Ford 9". Personally id do the 9" cause if i was going 1JZ it would be a drag car.

Gearbox will not mount to the standard position.
What i would do, is get the setup for a 7M - R154 combo, bolt it to the 2M then put the R154 in and hold it there, then make the cross member sit there. (same process for W58).
Now you have the R154 in place, get the 1JZ and JZ bellhousing and bolt that up to the gearbox. Make the mounts for the engine, possibly the JZ mounts for MA61's will work (search for them, infact, just search for anything, dont listern to anything i say)..
Then wire it up, get a drive shaft to suit the longer gearbox and new diff.

    Go broom broom.

Thats a few months work and several thousands right there.

standard turbo will fowl the steering box, convert to single turbo or rack and pinion or use VVTi 1JZ

And im sure there will be a lot of those kind of problems.
U'll also need to find out which of the various sumps will work with your cross member.

    hilux 8" will be fine
if u go w58 i will fit fine in the trans tunnel, and u use a 2JZ-GE bellhousing and flywheel
if u go R154 you will need to bash out the tunnel a bit

and that method of lining up the R154 is too much hassle dont bother wasting time and money getting a M and JZ bellhousing

just get the engine and box you want and make it fit in one go

You COULD go for a hilux diff, but it'd be a LOT easier to get an MX13/23 F series diff to BOLT STRAIGHT IN and will take the power well. Only downfall is less choice in LSD's

oh, and messing with steering is a pain in the arse on these, because there's not really ANy racks to fit because they are double wishbone, and you need a very narrow rack. I was going to do it, but i couldn't find a suitable rack, not even off a small car like a laser

the stock F series diff will hold up fine, dont bother with a diff conversion just yet....

pretty sure its an F series (cant remember...its been a while since i got rid of mine)

1jz: heaps of aftermarket parts available

1ggte: alot of CUSTOM work needed for aftermarket parts...

either way they will still be alot of fun in a old rona, they still only weigh round the 1250kgs

    edit: 1140kg as per brochure
