I recently was caught out doing some electrical/sound work on my GT4 when I needed my multimeter and instead of getting a crucial reading I was faced with a "bat flattery"![]()
since my car was not exactly in 1 piece and totally had stuff scattered everywhere..(organised mess I like to call it!) I could drive into town to get some new AAA batteries.
In a depressed and frustrated state, I did a thorough garage and kitchen search and could only find a 3/4 full 9V (rectangular) battery.
Not to be perplexed with that I decided to whack it in the vise (not crucial but easier)
and strip the metal casing and the end covers off. If you try this yourself for any particular reason.....including sheer curiosity......you'll find 6 small very near AAA size cells. They are close enough to get you out of a fix and only require a slight tug on the spring...maybe....to fit fine!
I thought, DAMN!!, maybe it's cheaper to buy 9V batteries and strip the cells out of them all, but a quick search on www.DSE.com.au found that you can get 30 aaa for about $22
and 6 9V for about $16.
You do the math...but it's much cheaper to get the triples......
hope this helps if you ever need AAA's for anything...even the remote controls everywhere![]()

Amazing what you find out of sheer desperation!
you'll also find the amp-hour rating of those cells in the 9V batteries are REALLY REALLY low compared to a regular alkaline AAA.
Your multimeter would last about 1/10th the time.
...... butt scratcher?!
your right but its still cool !!Originally Posted by The Witzl

also, if you ever need a 9 volt battery clip, just (carefully) remove the top (terminals attatched to black cardboard bit) from a flat 9 volt battery, and solder wires to the back of them. they are about 11ty billion times more reliable than the ones you buy (which are shit)
I thought this thread was going to be about battery carving, homer simpson style.
Jaycar sells about 5 different types of 9V battery clips.... some of which are crap, and some really good.Originally Posted by shinybluesteel

G'day Witzl,

You will also find some 9V batteries has the cells the complete cross sectional size 'stacked' if you will, rather then a bunch of long round cells..

I guess it's easier than linking up a lemon tree to the multimeter...![]()
I thought the only difference between D cells and AAA was their size? So, like Norbie said, the smaller the battery the less time it will power your item. The D batteries are needed in more power hungry items because an AA size would run out of power too soon. SO, you COULD run your remove on D batteries so you'd almost never have to change them, it'd just be too big and bulky.
I'm assuming those 9V batteries just have six 1.5V cells running in series based on what you've said above.
I'm so postmodern......
I did it once in high school where my scientific calulator ran out so we went into the electronics workshop and grabbed some wires and clips and made up a holder for a C-size cell and I used that. People thought it wouldn't work, as long as the voltages on them are the same it will.
Different when you are talking about high power consumption devices though.

9Volt battery, 6 for $16, that's equivalent of 32 AAA Batterys for $16, yet you say 30 trip As is better for $22?
For sheer volume, the 9volts work out better!
But as said before, the 9volt version will run out quicker.
