Default Powering up the 1J Soarer - worth going a cheap single?

I was going to sell the Soarer off (92 model, auto, 1JZ, stock) but I keep seeing these cheap ebay manifolds. So I start thinkging the usual - Put a 2nd hand single on there, run some lines, FMIC kit from justjap, MV shift kit, exhaust, no idea what to do about management/fuel supply. What is needed? Just a mild buildup, not chasing 300rwkw.
Secondary to this - can a MV Autos shift kit be installed at home, or is it a specialist auto build?

But the question is, if im just going mild, will exhaust + fmic + boost get me over the 200rwkw mark without playing with management/injectors etc?

My background is with other jap motors, and the power levels and ease with which they seem to be achieved on 1J's has pricked up my curiosity.

    Thanks

220rwkw through an auto and stock turbos is not uncommon...bit of a ticking timebomb though

cant really go wrong with an ebay manifold, gate and turbo these days...my brother is seeing 220rwkw on 11psi with his untuned JZA70 supra and a hypergear TR44 turbocharger...im personally rather impressed

200rwkw is about normal these days. Exhaust (no dumps), FMIC and 15psi would probably get you there.

If you want to make more than that you can make the stock system more efficient with dumps, tuning of ecu, cam gears etc. or you could put the money into a single.

With the price of stuff these days I would go for a single turbo. I also run a Hypergear TR44 and I am very happy with it. No dyno figures or 1/4 mile figures yet. Very responsive for a cheap turbo, 15psi at 4200rpm in my 1250kg car (race weight) and 4.6:1 diff gears.

This turbo has made 298rwkw on a ca18. Can't remember what boost level.

For the price, you can't go wrong. Come with 12month, 30000km warranty as well.

i dont know about these rwkw figures, but 300rwhp is very acheivable with a full exhaust, FMIC kit and a boost up, around 13-14psi.

will be a bit less through an auto.

AFAIK the shift kit can be done at home with a pair of stands, a jack, and sockets and spanners, bit of a fiddly job, but by no means hard.

that makes for a very nice, midly quick street car, with very usable power.

if 300rwhp is going to happen SAFELY with no tune, just exhaust FMIC and boost, then I'm there with bells on. What are the standard practices with tune on these things? Leave it, SAFC?

Chris - I don't really see 4000rpm+ for 15psi as responsive.....My 233rwkw Skyline had that, and it came on hard. Was far from responsive. Nothing nothing nothing BANG!

Got all the skills/tools to put an MV kit in by the sounds of it. Time for some phone calls!

    Thanks guys.

That is why I mentioned that my car is a hell of a lot lighter than yours and I had 4.6:1 gearing. My car is not all or nothing, it comes on smooth from about 2800rpm.

SAFC will be needed to get over 200rwkw. It is cheap anyway.

Dynos are a tuning tool. You should be trapping 106mph with 220rwkw or 103mph with 200rwkw.

Yes I would recommend Jampac's turbo but for the price mine is doing a very good job

Hey chris are you sure your gearbox is not slipping? I didn't think my one was until I saw this graph of before and after. I wouldn't think a roller bearing turbo would be that far behind a dual ball bearing turbo.

No, not sure. How do you tell exactly?

Seems pretty normal to me though. I will see how I go when I retest with the 4.1's in there. Response should be pretty good with a 50 shot as well

Do a test of how boost comes on with rpm, rebuild box, repeat test

    yeah, safely.

buy and fit Dumps, same with the cooler, and 13 pounds.

should be ok to leave it as is like that, just make sure your fuel pump is healthy, stock will do nicely.

just realise that it'll be less HP through an Auto, but with the shift kit, you'll more than make it up down the track in shorter gear changes.

My car made 179.8rwkw on 10pi with the stock turbos, exhaust fmic wolf3d and fuel pump.

I now have a Ebay Single Manifold, Ebay T70, Ebay Wastegate on there, havent got it tuned yet, but feels the whole lot more powerful then before, on the same amount of boost.

jampac - thats not bad. I would probably go a slightly smaller single than that.

Looks like exhaust/fmic/boost should keep me happy.
