Default Early vs Late 7MGTE crank.

Ok, so I know that the late model crank has more counter weights, but is there any real difference in the ability of either cranks?? Should one crank type be chosen over the other for a build up, or in the scheme of things, is it much of a muchness??
    Thanks.

I would be using the later crank.

Early cranks had no counterbalances on cylinders 2 and 5

Later cranks had counterbalances on all cylinders

Later cranks weighs more then the early crank , Later crank is smoother then early crank

Been told that the counterbalanced crank isn't noticable until high speeds (>140kph)

    high speeds?!?!?! what?!?!?!?

what does a crank have to do with the speed the car is doing? i thought it was all about the speed of the engine?! i.e. more stable at higher revs.

    someone explain please!

Yeah, the counter balanced crank will be smoother at higher engine speeds (i.e. rpm), irrespective of vehicle speed.

so why is more counterweights better? or is it that the later crank is measured much more accurately? Crazy 7m stuff

I just had the older crank balanced up for my engine. Figured less rotating mass could only be a good thing for a (comparitively) high rpm engine

Bah, i knew there was something wrong with what i said as i was typing it... yeah engine speed, not car speed.

Thanks for the replies so far.
So it is desirable to have the late crank, but is it worth trying to find and swap one in when my spare motor has an early crank?? ( I think it is, late 7MGTE's have green injector plugs don't they, and early has brown?? )
Hopefully this weekend I'll start stripping it down and having a look.

Can't answer that one, easiest thing to do is to pull the sump off . I'm not sure if there is a huge advantage to the later crank.. I'm actually leaving the early one in, figured with the lighter weight it'd spin up quicker. Plus I cbf finding a late one, lol.

The only way I can distinguish early and late 7m's is by the ecu plugs. Yellow being the earlier variety. But apparently there is two versions of 7m-gte that got the yellow plugs... so i'm not sure if the later yellow 7m got a later crank or not

There was a soarer 7M that had the yellow plugs too.
    Just pull the sump off!

1st gen 7M = 6M crank and no oil squirters
    2nd gen 7M = 6M crank and oil squirters
    3rd gen 7M = 7M crank and oil squirters

Both of my 7Ms are 2nd gen with squirters and 6M crank, both had brown injectors

    Edit - brown not green

The 7MGTE I had was 6M crank with oil squirters, brown injector clips (ALL 7MGTE's have black injectors), but it had grey ecu plugs.
