    Default Replacing 3SFE in SV21

Hey all, i just bought a 1989 SV21 Camry, that has an awesome bottom end knock, sounds like a kick smacking a stick on a wood fence. awesome.

anyway, im picking it up tomorrow, and frankly, as its the first front wheel drive car ive ever done serious work on (bar changing oil filter/alternator/starter motor etc.) i have no idea how to do it.

ive looked through members rides to get an idea of how to do it, and the only thing i can work out, is, its mostly like RWD, as in you just undo everything and strap it on and jack it up and out of the bay, but i dont have a clue as to whether you need to take the gearbox out in the car, how the CV's are removed (as i understand you need to take them out to remove the engine?

so can anyone whos done this give me a brief run down of whats needed?

    so far...

pull wiring through from firewall/glovebox area.
undo all wiring from fusebox etc.
    strap engine to engine crane
    jack up slightly,
undo all 4? engine mounts (any gearbox mounts?)

obviously undoing radiator/exhaust powersteering lines etc.

any tips and tricks to make life easier? and do i need any SST's for the CV's etc?

i dont think its actually as complicated as im imagining it.

and yes, i know its a noob question, but id prefer a little heads up, if it'll save me a few hours scratching my head.

    Cheers.

the cv shafts pop out with a lever bar on the gearbox end of the shaft..it has like a circlip on the shaft thats inside the gearbox..or itl be like the corollas and have a seperate shaft whre you undo 6 nuts and the shafts will come off there.. from memory..the gearbox comes out with the engine and dont forget to take the gear shifter linkages off..sometimes you need to undo the kuckle assembly to get enough room to take theshafts out..
    hope i was helpful.

yeah shifter etc. i dont have a problem with, just getting my head around taking an engine out sideways with a gearbox under it, as opposed to hanging off the arse end.

    Cheers, rep coming your way

yeah its not too bad..if you lift the engine out on an angle the gearbox will follow..very similair to doing RWD car with the gearbox still on..if you come across any trouble pm me and ill see if i can help

Take the engine out the bottom, 100x easier than shoe horning it in through the top.
It's easiest to leave the gearbox on the car then take it off afterwards.

To remove the cv shafts first undo the two big ass nuts (30mm I think) securing them in the hubs. Pull them out of the hubs then get a big screwdriver and give them a sharp jab to pop them out of the box, however take the drivers side one out FIRST, then take the passenger one out. The drivers side one will come out without any pressure once you've removed it from the hub and then removed the big circlip holding it into the CV carrier which is bolted to the block under - it will simply pull out with very little force.

3 of the engine mounts will be on the gearbox, the 4th is at the timing belt end of the engine

Basically once you have the cv's out, wiring loom pulled through, fuel, power steering, and air con lines, coolant lines etc disconnected you will do the following:

    Raise car off ground

Remove rear east - west cross member

    Support engine on engine crane

Unbolt front and rear engine mounts from underneath the north south crossmember - leave the rest of them attached to the engine until it's out of the car

    Remove North south crossmember

Unbolt the two east - west engine mounts

Drop engine and gearbox onto legs of crane etc

If necessary raise chasis enough to pull the engine out from underneath on the legs of the crane

Rinse and repeat in reverse to reinstall engine

Special tools won't really be needed, a LONG extension (40 - 60mm) will be handy if you don't already have one just to undo the nuts on the timing belt side engine mount.

    two conflicting views already

    well, it is toymods!

my main issue is with the CV's, as ive never done them before, so Dale, your post has really helped!

i think ill pull all the fuel/wires/etc off first, until i have everything in one unit, tape everything to the motor, then see how ill go about it, once i get those CV's off, should go smooth as butter!

    Thanks ya'll!

CV's are one of those things that are essentially pretty easy, but if you haven't done them before there's a lot of room for confusion and head scratching!

    Good luck

i think i once again need to impress the fact that im noob, so take it easy on me

Nup you'll see when you take the wheel off, there will be a cotter pin you need to bend back and take out, then a little shield thing, behind that is the nut for the CV... get someone to stomp on the brakes while you try and crack the nut, there's every chance they'll be very tight.

If the brakes slip position a prybar or something similar between two of the studs so that it will wedge against the ground when you undo the nut, get a guy on the brake at the same time just to reduce the risk of snapping a stud

Oh I forgot to say earlier.. to actually get the CV out of the hub you'll need to either unbolt the lower control arm from the hub, or the strut from the hub so you can move the hub outwards

I take it you're suggesting undoing the axle nuts so you remove the driveshafts altogether?

The nut is on the outside of the hub (in the centre of the wheel) & stops the driveshaft from falling inwards towards the gearbox.
At the gearbox end, mostly they're "snap in", though make sure you drain the gearbox of oil first, or you'll get covered in it.

Also suggest removing the bonnet to give you room to get the engine crane in there properly. It doesn't really hinge up far enough.

PS any chance you want to install a bolt in turbo diesel engine in there? I need to get something quicker...

turbo deisel? sounds like exactly what i need, but for $300 MAX, i dont think i can afford it...

the 3SGE looks good too, looks like it'll bolt in as far as engine mounts/gearbox etc.

for the ECU, wiring and exhaust im in trouble though, if it was completely bolt in i wouldnt think a second about it
