Guide: MA61 Custom Rear Parcel Shelf

Hey guys, i think i posted this on the old forums ages ago and just stumbled across it today as i was cleaning up files on the computer. So i thought I'd post it up again for those that haven't seen it. Enjoy.

I thought I’d make a write up on the parcel shelf i made for my supra for anyone who was interested. My intentions were to mount some 6*9's in the parcel shelf which would save me having to cut up my stock brackets and speaker covers like many others have done but i have found out that 4*6's fit in the stock locations and sound just as good so I'll be doing that soon enough instead.

Anyway here are the drawings with all the dimensions on it.



Theres basically only 2 parts to it, the shelf and the support bar. It goes where the blind sits and also rests on the plastic side panels of the boot.

As you can see below the support bar was beveled slightly and also routered on the ends so it fits in the original blind holder positions nice and snug. To stop annoying creaking/vibration sounds i glued a small piece of thin carpet around the ends of the support bar where it sits in the blind holders.





Note: you must unscrew the white clips that the blind sits in for this to work.

With the shelf, i tacked on some edges to give it a more stock looking effect and to stop stuff from sliding off it when going around corners etc. These were just glued and nailed on with some nice big clamps to keep it all together.



Test fitting: For this parcel shelf you must take out the rear top seat belt mounts otherwise you wont be able to get the shelf in the car and sitting where it is supposed to be.

Place the support bar between the 2 blind holders. Note there will be a little gap on each end, this is okay and just the best way i found for it to stay nice 'n' snug with little to no free play. Then place the parcel shelf on top where it is going to sit. I have mine sitting flush with the rear seats. I had to cut a little bit away from the bottom left hand corner to make it fit correctly, otherwise it will sit too far forward. Clearance on the other side was fine though. On the right hand side i had to cut a semi circle, about an inch in, to accommodate the seatbelt otherwise it didn't retract like it was supposed to.




When you have the shelf sitting where you like it, just mark on the underside against the support bar and the shelf so you know how it lines up when you screw the 2 together. Note, the support bar isn't going to be smack bang in the middle of the parcel shelf, it is going to be a little off-center. I just used some glue and big screws that were lying around in the garage to do the job. Once that is done, install it in the car for the final fit before carpeting. If you want to mount speakers in the parcel shelf, this it the time to cut the holes and make special brackets to mount them at an angle if you so desire.

Carpeting: I just bought some black speaker carpet from Autotrim just down the road. A big piece that was more than enough cost me $20. I glued it part by part, using books and pieces of wood laid on top of the carpet to keep it flat and to ensure a good finish. I carpeted the edges and a little under the bottom so it was the carpet rubbing on the plastic side panels of the boot and not the wood.
