sure you didnt get a 3sfe or had a 3sfe head ? the 3sge's arnt really my area but i couldnt imagine they changed the casting that much especially such that the cam cover dosent fit.
I've finished bolting on the head that I bought from the wreckers and I think its the wrong one.
Some background first: I have an '88 ST162 with a 3SGE that the head was stuffed on, about 15 thou warp. I looked around for a while for a good second hand head and seriously looked at about 6-7 bad heads until a wrecker told me he had a good one. So it was out of an '85 3SGE with the smaller lobes, I couldn't have given a crap at this point, I said that'll do.
To be precise this head is out of a 10/85 ST162 3SGE.
Tonight I went to bolt on the water outlet and WTF, the bolts don't match up. The mating surface on the replacement head is larger and the bolts further apart. However the outlet diameter is the same. I then decided to look at the cam covers and they are too narrow.
This is wierd, everything else matched up until this point.
My question is, how many series of 3SGE heads/engines did they put into ST162s and why does mine have some differences?

There were some significant changes in the ST162 in 87, its quite possible that the heads are slightly different, but I can't say for sure...
What I can say for sure is that if you have got a 3SFE head, then it will not fit, when you said that the cam covers are different, it makes me think you do have a 3SFE head, because as far as I know the cam covers on the 3SGE never changed regardless of the year...
I can post pictures of a 3SGE head when I get home if you want... I also have one decent one spair if you need it...
why didn't you just get it straightened?? if it passes a bounce test that is.. i had a 4age smallport head that was warped quite a bit.. had it bounce tested, straightened, new guides, stem seals, shaved 20 thou, i did some port work in the middle of this process... normally $660 RRP.. (much cheaper on trade) through barclays engineering up here in brisbane..
i'd rather be doing that.. then throwing another million km 20 year old head on it..
There are two series of the first gen 3sge's 85-86 is series one.87-89 in series two. They do have different valve covers. series one are gold in colour, series two are silver). they must also fit differently to each other by the sounds of it.
To make this new head work, get a water tee off the series one, that will solve that problem with the head. also get series one valve covers, and that will work too.
So effectively you've made the top half of your motor a series one.

Hi, Im enthused about corollas..
Its definitely not a 3SFE, I think on those one cam drives the other. This head has a pulley for each cam that is driven by the timing belt.
I thing your right Aust162, it looks like I'll need to track down some parts off the series 1 head.
Mattysshop - The original head was completely stuffed. I took it to an head shop and they said it was a write off. This head only cost me $160 and its straight, hard, and no corrosion. Bargain! I hope![]()
Hmmm, I have 3, 3SGEs at home, the one in the car (early 88 white lighting) was, what I believed to be a series 2 motor and it has gold cam covers... The other 2 motors, im not sure of their generations, but they all have gold cam covers...Originally Posted by Aust162
The car must have had an engine swap in its lifetime, which would'nt supprise me considering it has aftermarket pistions...
Doobs: On the series one - (gold cam covers) it should have the o2 sensor in the exhaust manifold. series two have the 02 sensor under the car.also slightly different intake pipe and a few other little differences i cant remember.![]()

Someone has told me its probably an MR2 3SGE. I'd say the wrecker did pull it out of a celica that someone had put an MR2 head on. Apparently the TVIS won't work properly with an MR2 head. That would explain why the butterflies on the intake get fouled on the head when they try to open. I'm going to need to look further into this.
