I think you'll find lots of people say "dont lighten a factory flywheel by machining it down", where material is removed from the engine side of the flywheel. It's common for the face to be machined.

Machining the face at clutch kit time (For example) is OK.
Did you see the 3rd link of Bobob's post? That is the one that I'll refer to as bad.
But I was after comment on the machining of the OD around the lugs that was done in the other links.
