And are welsh plugs readily available? Reason I ask, is I'm gonna have to replace mine I'd say when I get the 1g block 'done'..

    I did this a while ago: http://www.toymods.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2465

1st use a water based rust converter/primer. If any surface rust is starting, it will stop it going any further under your paint. Its a light green substance you just brush on, and when it dries where-ever there was rust starting will go black. Make sure you use plenty of wax and grease remover on the block first, and then a very light coat with some water (as per the instructions on the bottle). You can get the stuff in K&H brand or Septone, both work as well as each other IMO. Rodger suggested I do this, his paint has lasted MANY years on his block.

Then once the primer has dried you can spray on your engine paint!

I painted my engine well over 10 months ago and it hasnt cracked yet!

VHT for the win, 7 years and the paint was still great on the engine block.

But have you run it through a car wash 52 times, and does the water still bead?

my vote has to go to plain old "shop enamel" from your local paint supplier.

infact enamel is good for everything. ive painted 2 cars with it and many engines, gearboxes, diffs, trim pieces (black plastic on bumpers etc)

cheap too. about $45 for 4 litres. when you compare it to the cheap shit at super-crap-auto it even better value for money. there is more paint/dollar

very glossy and doesnt fade that quick. resistant to fuel/thinners. you can paint it onto a unprepped surface and it will still last forever!

A good tip for blocking up all the threaded bolt holes on the block (you'll obviously mask up the top of the block & install your welsh plugs) is a whole bunch of earplugs, particularily if you can get them free from work. Just like installing them in your ears you roll them up to compress them, stick them in the holes & they'll expand & form a nice tight plug that is easy to remove once painted.
Good one. I've used hot melt sticks - they come in a few diameters and can be softened crammed in and choped off flush with a blade. I wouldn't be putting silicone rubber around welsh plugs a good metal to metal seal is needed.

sillycar chick - my initial thought - that's a lot of nail polish! The stuff that turns iron black is Phosphoric Acid - available in many of the rust converters but it can get sticky if you don't wash it off quickly.

Goose indeed - ha, what cheek! Are you sure you're not polishing something else there Wilbo?

try not to touch the bare metal, the perspiration on your hands will cause it to rust. not straight away, but it'll be the starting point. the quicker you get paint on it the better.

im not going to guaratee that it will last forever....although it lasted 2 years on my 18rg.

I stripped back the block and painted it metallic purple and then clear coated it. I used normal acrylic car paint. Boy was it fukn glossy
Every1 said it wouldnt last as soon as it got hot.....2 years later it was still going strong.

As i said i wont guarantee it......but hey worth a try and it paid off
