My sig has been pruned as it was over 5 lines long.
the 18rg race cars in the 80s made about 185 hp max with mechanical injection 11to 1comp with avgas some special big lift cams ,corrillo rods etc and also some big arse extractors ,the only thing you couldnt do then was port the head ,but have flowed a lot of toyota heads and you cant do to much to them or they will loose flow and hp ,so with a good clean up and open up the exhaust most likely 190 hp tops
the 16 valve version only made 220 to 240 hp around the same time
210 hp with 1968 ccfrom a 18rg race spec not likely even if it was efi
IIRC the 153e made around the 280hp mark at somewhere like 10,000rpm. Not really practical, nor cheap, but its pretty crazy figure, so things like that can happen. Mind you that motor was bored to 2.2L, and possibly stroked.
18RGs arent the most powerful engines, but they are still a lot of fun to drive, and are reasonably powerful compared to many modern non-turbo engines
Sux about your car dude, a friend of my GF had the same thing happen when she was driving her lancer. Nearly killed her as she was doing 80 on the motorway at the time... so just thank fuk that you werent in it at the time, could have been much worse. Hope she gets straightened all good.

Yeah it sux but it gives me a good reason to cut the rust out and a new paint job. And your right i sure could have been alot worse. Its only stuffed the front guard and a few steering bits and pieces not a scratch on the door or bonnet and no dents in the bumper...
Iv put a link to some pics of what he did in the classic celica thread. My mate who's house it was out the front of put it up on ns.com...
Will keep you posted of the results but my 2.2L is nearly back together after the last guy who assemble it fuked everything but thats another story. Here are some pics of the ports on my engineOriginally Posted by Celica RA45

Are you intending to run at these venues?
I rekon i mite take it for a bit of a run at symmons cause iv got a few mates that are planing on taking there cars for a bit of a go out there when there done i think. that escort sound pretty crazy...
Hey guys,
what is the consensus regarding oil pickup and sump configuration for an 18RG that is going to see some track use.
I ask because my first time at willowbank up here I ran too high in the revs (me = dickhead) and basically couldnt pick up enough oil going around the 2 big right handers at the end of the straight. Bearing grabbed on #4 and snapped the conrod......some pics soon.
My sump looks like it had a bit of baffleing already setup, but I am just wondering if anyone is running deeper sumps with a longer neck on the oil pickup and some better baffling system?
I don't want to build up my new engine only to have the same happen again (with me not being as big a dickhead driving of course).
I read in the `for the love a tractor engine` that the 18rg's had a habit of spinning bigends.
Thanks.
Dave
Hi,
Yes, I saw that too. However, this engine was used very successfully for quite a few years in racing in Japan and Europe. Also it was used in rally races. And, don't forget that for a few years they were very successful running around Bathurst. These cars didn't spin their big ends.Originally Posted by floppy
Such failures comes down to either the engine wasn't properly prepared for racing, or you used inferior components.
I don't know if you need larger baffles or you need to re-vamp the oil delivery mechanism, but almost any "production street" engine will give problems if your driving methods are writing cheques your engine can't cash.
Peter Wilkinson, who used to race the Chickadee Chickens 18R-G powered RA40 has a workshop in Sydney. I can't remember the name of his shop, but Toyman75 might. Wilko would be the guy to ask as he still has a fondness for these engines, was very successful racing them, and he could probably give you some ideas to how he set up his engine.

the problem with 18rg motors are the rod bolts and rods ,alright for every day driving ,but no good for racing as they spin the bigends ,you can change the rod bolts for some chevy 400 rod bolts from ARP or just get some corillo rods like they used back at bathurst ,and you need to baffle the sump big time ,when they raced the RA 23 at bathurst they used a bmw race accumalator they acted as oil cooler and engine repair kit ,till they went to dry sump which fixed the major problem of bearing failures
