It would be helpful to know the engine setup youre having this problem.
And does the car have any other symptoms than this sound?
Hey guys, tonight, I had 3 people in my car, and I gave it a squirt, 1, 2 and 3rd, all 3 gears chirping. Then, when i slowed down, i heard this ticking sound, similiar to tappets, but just a bit louder. The turbos were only replaced with new steel wheels about 2 months ago, so i doubt its a turbo gasket. The higher I rev, the faster the ticking sound gets and vice versa. Does anyone know what maybe the problem is? im not sure what a leaking exhaust gasket sounds like. I dont seem to be loosing any power what so ever.
Cheers!

if uve got low oil, old oil, or thin oil. it may be causing noise from the lifters or valves or sumfin like that.
try topping it up wif watever uve got. if it fixes it then do a proper flush. if it doesnt, plz do a proper flush!
it has worked on my celica, and my brothers magna, which im yet to do a flush on![]()
Does it happen while idle reving?
Get someone to rev the car while your out of it and try and locate the source of the sound.
A similar thing happened to mine awhile back (i mean a strange ticking sound) and it turns out it was a part of the turbo/dump gasket had fallen into the the exhaust and was rattling in there! (yes it was a heaps old fried to death gasket) Im not saying thats what yours is but I located the sound and found the problem that way![]()

A race continues forever...
yes could be leaking gasket somewhere on the turbos or straight off the head
Sorry, its 1JZGTE.
I found the Filter has "snapped" off a little, so its half on, and half open! Also, was suppose to do the oil yesterday, but too hot, will do it today, and see what the outcome is.
Yes, it happens when idle revving.

i'd be checking for a manifold leak too.
look around the turbo manifold to head and manifold to turbo and see if you can see any black sooty deposits forming in one spot. or run your hand around these areas with the car running to see if you can feel where the leak may be. do this when the engine is cold (eg. first start up in moring). not only will it help in not burning yourself, but a manifold leak will be worse when everything is cold before the metal heats up (thermal expansion doobie).
Does the noise get louder the higher the revs? My mate had a ticking noise on his SR20DET, which we thought was timing chain rattle, aparently a common noise in SR20's. Anyway, the more he drove, the louder it got, until it got so loud, you couldnt stand it. Pulled the engine apart and found there was some MASSIVE piston slap on 3rd cylinder. Not saying thats what it is, but you should take everything into consideration...
na, the sound stays at the same volume, when im driving @ 60 or so, i cant hear it, only when i slow down, or take off and idle
thanks for that, im over in the west tho.
ok, changed oil, its definatley not that, i think maybe the Thrust Bearing?? When I engage clutch, the noise stops, and when im off load, the noise is pretty loud. Anybody? The clutch is only 2 month old![]()
Your gearbox stops rotating, when you kick the clutch...
So it migt be some bearing over there.
It can allso be your pressure assembly.

Anyway of finding out what if thats what it is or not?? Damn, wanted to run it this wed too![]()
Another 'maybe' for you.
A head gasket blown between cylinders can also sound like a ticking noise. If left the noise will get louder and eventually sound somewhat like valves tapping pistons![]()
To test for this, do a compression test on the engine.
This is only speculation on what your problem maybe since it is hard to tell without actually seeing the car.
