How do you think noise from blown head gasket would stop, when you push the clutch?

Only way to be sure, is to get the tranny out...

I have experienced a blown head gasket on an 18RG where by the noise got substaintially louder when the engine was loaded up by letting the clutch out on take off. So pushing the clutch in made the noise go away to some extent.

I am not saying this is the problem, just that it maybe something to conisder based on the circumstances that occured before the noise was first heard.

Given that someone with reasonable mechanical experience could look at the car I am sure the source of the noise could be diagnosed pretty quickly.

Like you said it could also possibly be the thrust bearing, pressure plate, clutch plate etc.

E.g. broken pressure plate finger, spring dislocated in the clutch plate - if it is a dampened clutch plate and not a solid clutch plate.

Hey guys, on the way to work this morning (Didnt make it, im back home) The loud got REALLY loud, so i got scared, put it in neutrual and stopped. Put it back in gear and start accelerating, and its like the brakes are on, didnt move. Now, waiting here, so i can get it towed to workshop

Could it possibly be a diff issue? Sounds like the gearbox area tho.

Given you can hear the noise, and it was coming from the front of the car, it's likely to be a clutch or gearbox problem. Workshop will find out not long after they pull the box hopefully.

Sounds like the Pressure plate in your clutch is not dis-engaging?? eg- you push the clutch pedal in and put in gear then release the clutch pedal but the actual clutch itself is still engaged. Maybe??

i think its the gearbox. There was a little drip of oil on the driveway this morning.

Anyone know where to get a Supra JZA80 W58? I saw one on Adelaide Jap for $550.

Wait until you get confirmation of what the problem is before you go buying a new box.

I was going to say check for big end or little end movement but that would be described as a knock not a ticking noise. But since you said about the clutch etc. it wouldn’t be that.

Can you get it in gear?? I mean when you say you are accelerating and it is like the brakes are on can you dissengauge the clutch put it in gear and let the clutch out and the engine get load put on it or is there no load going to the drive train?

Did it just rev out or did it bog down. If it revs out then i would be inclined to think that your clutch or pressureplate has let go. The tapping could have been the pressure plate flapping around in the bellhousing and knocking on one of the ribs.

If it doesnt rev out, i would be thinking a bearing in the input shaft of the gearbox, especially if the car rolls in neutral. If it wont move in neutral either, then it will either be the diff or the output shaft bearings. If it is the box, dont throw it away, as it is most probably repairable, and if you decide just to replace it, sell it to some holden/ford bogan for an outlandish price and let them fix it.

    clunking sound?

same speed with rpm, any gear = inputshaft tooth gone.
more noise in any one gear, = tooth on that gear goooone...

gotta love the sound of a crunchy gearbox in the morning....

you could always try and do a fully sik dorifto clutch kick to break off more teeth
(had to do that once to get box moving again )

A buggered throwout bearing can have an inconsistent sound that increases in frequency with revs, but its usually will sound more like a bad metal on metal friction than a tapping noise in my experience. Have only seen two cases tho.

My understanding however is that everything will still work with a bad throwout, its just noisy when the clutch is in and the life of your clutch fork and or pressure plate can be shortened.

One of the cases i know is a Subaru Impreza that has had a rooted throwout bearing for about 2-3 years now. Its still goin, you'd almost say its got quieter...

If you obliterated it altogether somehow??? You would theoretically be applying your clutch fork against your pressure plate. That couldn work for long, but i would think you notice major differences in your pedal throw / travel.

My mechanic had a go of it, and def says its gearbox. Said the same thing happened to his car (Also W58). Would the cost of rebuilding it be cheaper? Or just try and find another one?

Ask a gearbox specialist how much to do it, or give it a go yourself. Find out exactly what is wrong, if its just a bearing, itll be cheapish, if its a toothless gear, then itll be dear.
