If you're going to the trouble of changing the headgasket, you're going to have to get the head skimmed anyway, just ask the bloke to take and extra mm or so off. There you go free compression. But that said you'll probably get more power by putting a new set of plugs and changing the fuel filter than you will by shaving the head. It's a boat anchor, don't waste your time or effort on it.

if you were to do anything, port it a little (for the heck of it), make up extractors, and a better intake and bugger off the carb for something slightly better... and then think about cam...
but it is still pushing.... uphill.

a thinner headgasket would be the very least of my thoughts.
original HG is maybe 0.8mm thick. each mm gives about 5cc change? in volume. so if you change to a 0.4mm gsaket (do they make copper/MLS that thin? you migth get 2.5cc change......

much easier to skim the head 1mm..... but still, unless you do the supporting things, the change in compression will be barely noticeable... as said previously...

realistically... you are approx 2 months away from a 4age, why waste money on something you are going to hopefully throw out???

might aswell run down main street in the nude screaming 'I've lost me lucky charms!'

    As above - WHY?

Have you actually blown the existing HG?

The only real reason you're come up with so far is "for something to do".

You'd be much better of working on other parts of the car like - oh I don't know - brakes, suspension.

Or if you'd prefer you could spend all your money ricing it up with stickers and panda paint and a big fat cannon.

Smash a hole in your muffler with a pick.

The seat-of-the-pantso-meter should feel a much greater improvement than a thinner headgasket would reap and will also have the added bonus of increased street cred - particularly in the vicinity of the golden arches.

Default thinner head gasket for a 4ac

damn, i had the hammer in my hand.... just joking, the temptation to smash the peice of crap to peices would be too much.
ok well now this idea is out of my head. i just thought it might be a cheap easy way to get slightly more power untill i got my new engine but you have shown me the light.
and your right, i could be concentrating on other things like the new pipe bender at my dad's work and the stock exhause i have now...............

if i were you i'd be looking into using a decent intake on you engine, and trying to find an exhaust system while your at it ! But thats as far as i'd go with the 4ac. After that if you realy love your car that much start saving for a 4ag motor, everyone on here knows they are they dux nuts.

this must be a very interesting subject. ther are so many reply's. but hay if you want a project, try and be the first person to get 50bhp without being force fed out of the mighty 4ac. I got a big improvment just by changing the plugs, leads, points, condensor, fuel filter, and air filter, cost $60 and about 30 min of my time

Save ya pennies mate... a polished turd is still a turd. Heck, with the extra you can save by not giving a rats arse about your current motor, you could buy a 20V 4AGE instead of a 16V version, or maybe get a 4AGZE for that extra zoom. Maybe invest in some new brake rotors and pads, or a full brake upgrade. If your going faster, you wanna stop faster.

That's not 'improving' anything, that's merely replacing parts that should be replaced every couple of decades anyway...

the point im getting at is that is about the most improvment you should ever need to do to a 4ac, if you want power dont waste your time on it,
but doing these things will make the car fell better at lower RPM

just leave the head gasket out. bit of gasket gue should suffice, compression increase + weight reduction, its win-win

    Best... topic... ever.

Seriously, if you have a 4AC that runs and drives then you're doing well - because that's exactly what it was designed to do.

I would normally suggest oil, filters, plugs etc as the right direction to head... but to be honest if you're just throwing the motor away in a month or two I wouldn't even waste the money on that!
Must.... avoid.... urge... to... upgrade... parts I haven't.... used.... yet.....

I always wanted to see one with a wet nitrous system. 50Hp kit? Would cost you around a grand I think. Of course not legal on the road but if your taking the car for drift/hill climb. I am sure it would be a shit load of fun. Even if it was just for the first 5 minutes till it blew
