umm on 4ag's you line a dimple on the lower timing sproket up with a simple on the oil pump housing
edit: oh i see your issue not lining up the crank but lining up the cams.
didnt you set the engine at TDC before you pulled it apart.. hence shouldnt the cams and belt be at TDC so lining up tyhe crank at tdc and then placing the cams back in place ?
no i didnt set it TDC, i didnt know i had to until i couldnt get it back togethervalves were open. it all came apart so easy but it just wont go back together
do you have the plastic cover for the cam gears as well? cos il take that too
Don't despair, you should be able to get it close enough to run without the plate. Assuming you still have the pulleys tied to the timing belt:
1 - Set the motor to TDC.
2 - Pull off the oil filler cap and turn the inlet cam until you can see a little 'notch' which should align with the shelf under the cap:
3 - The cams should look like this from the front:
Notice I've marked the pins in red.
4 - That should be OK, but I'd suggest you pop the rocker covers off and have a look at the cams themselves. At TDC, they should be basically a mirror image of each other with the lobe for no1 on the outside, just up from the horizontal:
Inlet:
Exhaust:
That should be enough to get you out of trouble.
Strange things are afoot at the circle K
cheers for that info helped heeps!, I got it the best I could until tomorrow.
I started the car up and idled fine and then herd a noise and i lost a couple of mm on my timing belt to find i put the washer on teh crank gear on back to front rofl!
may as well wait til tomorrow when i get that backing plate before rectify the problem cos its guna need doing all over again :s
i always rebuild my ge/gze's with-out the silly backing plate. i like the open cam wheel look.![]()
There's 13 belt ribs between the two marks on the cam gears, if that helps.
so do I but I have a yellow licky on my car and the pitlane require for a cover to be fittedOriginally Posted by feral4mr2

prob same thing I did
put some pretty plastic over the wires and re-tape, shift the loom over and wire tie it to the TMIC bracket at the front of the motor and the hook at the rear of the motor.
