squeeling noise from timing belt -4AGE- ITS BACK! :(

I thought my fan belt was slipping so I just went out and bought a new one and some sticky spray to make sure it doesn't slip at all, when I took the fan belt off and went to crank the engine to rotate the crank pulley the engine started and the squeel was still there!so with no fan belt on it cant be from the water pump or alternator. What is causing this squeeling?
It just suddenly appeared! is it the timing belt tensioner?or something worse?

It's probably the pulley from the timing belt tensioner... either that or you've dropped something into the timing cover (loose screw / bolt) and it's rubbing against the timing belt.

Either way I would be pulling off the timing cover to have a look.

Hang on, so it still squeals when the fan belt is off? That could indicated something more serious. Check your oil pressure and suchforth, how many km on motor, and how long ago was it serviced?

Those timing belt tensioners do have a habit of dying after a while. Not particularly cheap either, around $70 for a new aftermarket one.

ok, it isnt the timing belt tensioner, i just replaced it and it is still making the exact same noise!
its a really freaking annoying noise!
the oil pressure is staying normal, i only put new oil in about 2 weeks ago, and I dunno how many Kms on the motor, but it runs fine. Chews oil and coolant, blows a bita smoke when cold, but other than that it runs fine. A compression test and leak down test didnt show any problems, just worn exhaust valves in 2 &3.
could it be something to do with the crank shaft timing pulley?
I have all the covers on the front of the engine off and i cant see anything stuck, but I dont have the tool to remove the crank pulley so I can't get the very bottom cover off, but I cant see anything in there.

maybe a bastard seal(crank or cam)

They do this type of thing sometimes

OR

pcv system is blocked or not as free as it should be creating negative pressure,
trying to suck air in through the seals

you can narrow down where the noise is coming from by using a long screwdriver and sticking it at variuos places on the front of the engine. place you ear on the other end and listen, when you get closer to the noise you will be able to hear it throught the screwdiver, narrowing down the source of the noise.

Its a very cheap listening device, just dont stick it in any rotating parts accidently!

youll probhably find that the bearing on the water pump is shot.

I think the problem is gone for now, I replaced the intake gasket which was a bit rooted and i dont think it was sealing properly. Now it runs with no squealing noise! just hope it stays that way!

i had the same problem with a bigport inlet that was adapted to fit a smallport head...bolts kept working themselves loose. Fit the right inlet & problem fixed

you'll prolly find you've got better fuel economy now as well...i was only getting about 280km to a tank when it was at its worst...its back up to 400 now

F**K'n hell its still there! what the hell is making this noise! its not there at idle any more, but at certain revs it starts squeeling!

What kind of squeel?

Like a suction squeel or a dry surface squeel?

Is there a vibration happening aswell with the squeel?

I've got this too! posted on the old forums and nobody could figure it out.
It's got new water pump, new tensioner pully, new clutch, new throwout bearing
Noise is still there with clutch in or out and with fan belt off.

BUT, i can get rid of the noise for a bit if i slip the clutch with the brakes on...???
Work on yours?

i think i'vegot the same weird squeal noise you're talkinga bout. mine only happens when driving, and when i have the throttle at a certain position. not rev specific or speed specific, doesnt happen when i free rev the motor in neutral.

but i could be talking about something completely different and wrong, nevermind

are you guys all usuing cut n shut inlets? Has noise been there from the start?

you'll find sometimes during the cut & weld the heat the inlet endures makes it warp ever so slightly as to leave a tiny gap around the throttle body...symptoms include a higher idle &/or squeal at certain rpm. I'd assume the severity of the idle/noise depends on the extent of the leak.

I've been told this can be fixed by packing the area around the tb with gaskets although i havent yet had the chance to do this to mine

whitchy, have you checked the bolts on the inlet again to make sure they haven't worked themselves loose?
