Default Aristo 2J Water Leak! Help Please!

    Hi all,

My aristo has finally arrived, and with it some serious problems.

The biggest worry im having is that there is a substantial water leak from what i think is the water/hydraulic pump. Ive check all water hoses which are fine. From a very awekward position underneath the car, I found a little hole on the bottom of the pump assembly. Water is definatley coming from this hole, so im not sure if its just letting water go through it or what....

Can someone please give me some ideas on this leak and how to fix it. I really dont want to remove the pump unless i have to and i really cant see any other places the leak could be coming from.

    Thanks heaps!
    Ben

Hard to tell from the pictures, but it sounds and looks like it's leaking from the weep hole on the pump.. they do this when they're stuffed and unfortunately the only real fix is a new pump

Im assuming then i have to completely remove all the front covers, fan radiator, etc... just like doing the timing belt?

If anyone in brissy has the knowledge on how to replace the pump and would be willing to help me next week it would be appreciated. Of couse a few dollars would go your way

    Thanks
    Ben

PS- theres no quick/temp fix for this is there...like blocking the weep hole up somehow?
The car needs to go through compliance yet, so i wanted to get everything sorted before then, but it looks like I have a few jobs to do yet and more money to spend then expected...

everything has to come off to replace the pump, basically do a timing belt swap, and replace the pump while the belt is off.

You might aswell do the crank and cam oil seals while it's all apart, along with the thermostat.

From the look of the alternator the engine has been leaking oil.

Pretty similar initial processes to doing the timing belt.. not sure if you'd have to remove the radiator or not to do it? There would be easier access to everything if you did though

I don't think there's any temp fixes, it's hard to tell what failed in it before you pull it off, so even if you did block it up.. the impellor blades might not be turning and thus you could do worse damage by doing so

The water pump on our camry (3S-FE) crapped itself in exactly the same way.

Yep, as everyone has said, time for a new pump.

I thought it would be worth adding, ours started leaking on a monday morning ( how convenient!!) So my Wife didn't have to go without the car for 5 days I gave it a dose of chemiweld. ( There's a thread on here all about this stuff)

Bear in mind, her car is only used for the daily school run etc. Runs for about 1/2 hr per day. It stopped leaking, and I replaced the pump on the weekend.

Anyway, for $9 a bottle it might get you out of trouble until you replace the pump.

    Cheers

It's an absolute Bitch of a job to do..

I had to do it twice GRRRRR

if you need a hand with parts and prices, let me know....

    "That's a huuuge Bitch"

If you use chemiweld, just make sure you flush it all out thoroughly before filling it back up etc..

    thanks people

The timing belt was replaced about 15,000kms ago, but the useless japs must not have replaced the pump while doing it. Ive watched a 1J waterpump get replaced and that was a nightmare. The Aristo 2J water pump assembly looks even scarier having the hydraulics attached to the front of it.

projectsleeper, if you could let me know part numbers and prices that would be awesome.
Im hoping i can just unbolt the old pump from the front hydraulic section without dicsonnecting the fan fluid lines and then bolt on a 2J supra pump? or is the aristo pump slighlty different

    Thanks again
    Ben

totally different pumps , unless u want to convert to the supra pump and run non standard fans (not recomended). unfortunatly you will get a shock as the a new hydro pump is $1200 from toyota . most people just get a good second hand one from someone whos done the supra pump conversion.
the oil over the alternator mainly comes from a leaking hydro pump .

What do you mean "has finally arrived"???
Was it sitting for a long time, weeks/months without any coolant in it, or maybe even with coolant ??
If so, the pump seal probably corroded and just running it without pressure, cap off for 10 to 30 minutes will usually cut through that surface corrosion, it'll stop dripping/pissing and it will finally seal up just fine when it is pressurized. It is more then a 50/50 chance in my experience.

The car has had a leak for at least 2 months that i know of. Was sitting at a dealer in Japan before i bought it. It had a mechanical inspection done which reported that the bottom radiator pipe was leaking. I dont think the mechanic knew what he was looking for....

So I should take the radiator cap off and run the engine for 10-30 minutes and see if the leak stops? I might go and buy some chemiweld and throw that in as well. No harm i spose.

Project sleeper => Can you please PM me your phone number as i need to speak with you about the pump.

    Thanks all!

I think I still have my old hydraulic pump lying around somewhere if you want to try a second-hand pump.
