I believe they arent too far from fitting. I have heard a couple of people using AE71 into RA2x's. If the manual rack fits, the PS rack also should fit.

Changing to R&P is a big job, I hope you already have calculated the angles and lengths so as not to introduce bump steer.

Oh, and have you gotten into the Classic Celica Dedicated Thread in the general car talk section yet?? If not, get your RA28 lovin arse on there, plenty of info you may be able to use (plus you will learn who to ask for advice on 1st gens)

No rack will fit in a RA28, but the KE70 rack can be used for a massive conversion. The power steering rack should bolt in the same as a KE70 rack. You may want to cut the steering rack mounts off the AE71 crossmember and use them, but you won't end up using the whole crossmember. (I have done this rack conversion before).

The steering colum from the AE71 would be handy also, you will end up using the bottom half of this.

AE71 is those square corollas before the sprinter and the KE70 looks the same but different motor. some guys like to slide em. they came out with a 4AC or a 4K motor i know of a toyota wrecker that is buying AE71's just for the x member and rack!

There were a number of corolla badges around, which have been around since the XE1X series. These include the Sprinter, Trueno and Levin... not all of which made it to aus in all series. AE86 is the well known one where the Sprinter came to aus, and the Levin and Trueno were the JDMs. TE27 Levins are popular with hillclimbs with the 2TG and farkall weight the go up quick.

Enough of the rolla history, back OT, any rack conversion on a 28 is going to take some effort... it just seems the AE71 era racks are the closest fitment, and require the least amount of modification.

I would disagree with your decision to go PS, as PS means PS pumps, PS lines, and PS fluid pissing all over your engine bay when they leak. (when, not if)

Good call. i was "toying" (pardon the pun) around with the idea for my RA40 race car and found that the AE71 rack option (not power steering) was going to be the best option to get rid of the idler arm set up. But later relaised that this would be an illegal set up for my class so scrapped the idea. but with some mucking around you will get there i found tie rod ends were going to be my main concern. talk to toyoland in lonsdale tell em strat told you to call ask for rick. paul was the one that got me onto the idea and seemed to know what he was on about but unfortunatly he is not there any more.

KE70 and AE71 racks and xmembers are the same.. The only difference is the engine mounts which unless you are planning on using a 4A engine will be cut off.

I consider the KE70/AE71/AE86 xmember and rack in my RA28 a very successful conversion. But its not a bolt in job!

Yeah I used the KE70 crossmember and steering column.

On the old forums I went through 2 different r&p conversions.. The first was a TA23 xmember with custom mounts and a rack mounted to that.

I then changed to the KE70 crossmember.

Look at my 3s-gte build up on the old forums, it is all part of that.

Also check bigworms ra23, he is doing the same thing now.
